RPMH undergoing renovations

While working to improve the lives of so many in Nolan County, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is receiving some vital help as well. The hospital has recently launched a renovation project that will increase the hospital’s energy efficiency and improve the medical/surgical wing.
“A lot has changed in the way buildings consume energy since our facility was first built more than 36 years ago,” said Donna Boatright, administrator of RPMH. “The impact of our renovations not only lowers our energy use, but also enhances our patients’ experience at our facility.”

Children’s art show to be held at local library

The West Texas Art Guild is sponsoring a Children’s art show at the County-City Library on Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012. The show will be divided into five age groups including ages 3-5, ages 6-8, ages 9-11, ages 12-14 and ages 15-18.
Name and age of the child must be attached to the back of the artwork. Ribbons will be awarded to first, second and third places, as well as honorable mention winners. One Best-Of-Show ribbon for the over-all best artwork will be awarded. All work must be matted and ready to hang.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 40 calls for service, issued no citations and made three arrests on Jan. 25, 2012.

The SPD received 18, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 2000 block of Lamar.
• Criminal mischief — 500 block of Wall.
• Criminal mischief — 200 block of E. Third.

Arrested by SPD:
• Male juvenile, 13 — Assault.
• Male juvenile, 16 — Disruption of classroom.
• Male juvenile, 14 — Order of immediate custody.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 15 calls for service, served three civil papers and made no arrests on Jan. 25, 2012.

2012 Miss Snake Charmer Pageant applications available

The annual Sweetwater Jaycees Miss Snake Charmer Scholarship Pageant is a time where young ladies from throughout the Big Country come together to compete for scholarship money. At last year's pageant, past queens were recognized for the 52nd year of the Miss Snake Charmer Pageant.
The annual pageant will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium. The pageant is open to all girls between the ages of 16-19 who live within a 75 mile radius of Sweetwater.

Southeast gives campus report at school board meeting

The SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) Board of Trustees were recognized at their regular meeting on Monday evening, Jan. 23, 2012.
As this month has been named School Board Recognition Month in Sweetwater, Nolan County Judge Tim Fambrough was in attendance to read the proclamation to the board members. The document praised their commitment to children and their education; the ongoing work with parents, staff and community members; establishing a firm foundation in local education; and supporting local and public education for the district.

USDA 2012 DCP and ACRE sign-up begins

Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, announced that sign-up for the 2012 Direct and Counter-cyclical Program (DCP) and the Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE) Program began on Jan. 23, 2012 and continues through June 1, 2012.
"I encourage producers to make an appointment with our office to sign-up for program benefits," said Cumbie.

Maikell to speak at Texas Farmers Union's 110th Convention

Waco, Texas — Texas Farmers Union delegates and members will convene for the 110th State Convention at the Menger Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. The convention will run Jan. 27 and 28, 2012, and will start at 1 p.m. on Friday, the 27th.
Texas Farmers Union President Wes Sims stated, "We will have a number of interesting speakers and programs. One of the speakers will be National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson, who will be speaking at the banquet on Saturday night."
