At the end of last year the Texas Veterans Commission provided a grant to the Goodwill of West Texas.
"The first cycle that we earned was scheduled to end the 31st of October," explains Coordinator of Veterans Services, Chuck Wilson.
However, Goodwill cut the program two weeks sooner than that scheduled date, leaving employees out of a job.
"It came as a shock," says former employee Arlanda Knight.
Former employees say the loss to the city of Abilene is an unfortunate one.
Knight says, "The sad part about it is we are actually losing a great resource in this community."
Feral hogs are taking over the Texas countryside and Brown County resident Jerry Campbell is doing his best to rid the state of this costly nuisance. Last week, America got their first look at the Campbell family in their own reality show, âAmerican Hoggersâ, which premiered Wednesday, Oct. 19, on the A&E Network. The show features the Campbell family and their adventures as they struggle to rescue Texas residents and ranchers from the devastating chaos caused by millions of invasive wild boars, states A&E.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 146 calls for service, issued 16 citations and made 10 arrests from Oct. 21-23, 2011.

On Monday night, Oct. 17, amidst roaring winds and blowing sand, the Sweetwater High School Marching Band put on a classy performance to earn them straight â1sâ in UIL marching competition in Abilene. âWe knew the bad weather was on the way, and it hit just as the band was preparing to perform,â explained band booster photographer Carola Martin. âWe braced ourselves, and the band played and marched like it was a walk in the park.â
Early voting for the Texas Constitutional Amendment Election begins on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, in the Nolan County Clerk's Office, located at 100 E. Third Street, Suite 108 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday until Friday, Nov. 4, 2011. The last day for the County Clerk to receive an application to vote by mail is Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
For the second year in a row, there will be two back-to-back fundraising events associated with the Round-Up for Rehab in Sweetwater to raise dollars for the West Texas Rehabilitation Center. A Shrimp Peel dinner and auction will be held at the Nolan County Annex on Tuesday evening, Oct. 25, the night before the sale at Sweetwater Auction which will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 26.

Nolan County 4-H is currently celebrating National 4-H Month in October. During National 4-H Month, many local 4-H projects are on display at the County-City Library. The works, including photographs entered in contests, pillows and clothes from the 4-H Fashion Show and many photos, will be on display throughout the month of October. The hours for the library are Monday 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
