Alon gas pumps will soon be popping up at local 7-11 gas stations. Alon purchased hundreds of 7-11's in the region that sell Fina gasoline. Last week, Alon signs were put up at local 7-11 convenience stores. While the name will change from Fina to Alon, the curved red, white and blue stripes will remain the same.
The City Commission met for their monthly meeting on Tuesday morning, May 8, 2012 at City Hall.
Three bids were opened for construction on the 2011 TCDBG (Texas Community Development Block Grant Program) sewer improvement project. Two of the three bids were from San Angelo companies, while the third was from a Waco-based business.
Local employees of the Texas Department of Transportation were recently honored for their years of service to the agency. Daniel Caballero (shown), who has since retired from the Nolan County maintenance office, was honored for 35 years with TxDOT.
Also honored but not pictured was Joe Ashley, a Nolan County maintenance transportation technician, who was recognized for five years of service. Lauren Garduno, P.E. (left), Abilene District Engineer, made the presentation during a meeting in Abilene.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 43 calls for service, issued no citations and made two arrests on May 7, 2012.
The SPD received 21, 911 calls.

AUSTIN â€“ The Texas Department of Public Safety has added Paul Joseph Borreson, 56, to the Texas 10 Most Wanted Fugitive list and a $7,500 cash reward is being offered for information leading to his capture. He is affiliated with the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas gang and has been arrested 46 times in at least 11 states. All tips can be offered anonymously.
TMSCA students from Sweetwater Middle School recently traveled to San Antonio for the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association State Competition. They competed in Math, Science, Calculator and Number Sense. There were over 500 students from around the state that competed.
While they did well in Math, Number Sense and Calculator, in Science they excelled as a team and individuals. The team consisting of Daniel PeÃ±a, John Clift, Kilanie Arpin, Chance Saunders, Lizzie Gray and Marc Butler received eighth place out of 21 teams.
On Saturday, May 26 the annual WASP Homecoming 2012 will begin with an honor parade from Sweetwater Plaza at 9 a.m. to the museum. Other WASP will arrive in the WASP Fly-in at 10 a.m. Joining the Fly-in will be vintage planes from the CAF, Wisconsin and Louisiana, along with modern aircraft. One Stearman trainer is returning to Avenger Field for the first time since WWII.
Meek Blood Center will have two blood drives in Sweetwater on Thursday, May 10, from noon until 6 p.m. A bloodmobile will be at Sweetwater Spine Clinic, located at 1413 Hailey Street. The second blood drive will take place inside the Lions Club building, located at 1501 Lamar.
Meek Blood Center recently revised their guidelines regarding many medications and medical conditions, which will qualify more people as blood donors. Those who have been deferred for medications and medical conditions in the past are asked to call 325-670-2798 to inquire about eligibility.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 115 calls for service, issued 23 citations and made three arrests from May 4-6, 2012.

AUSTIN - The Texas Department of Public Safety today announced the implementation of new proof of residency requirements to obtain Texas driver licenses or identification cards effective May 7, 2012. The requirements, which only apply to first-time driver license and identification card applicants, are the result of legislation approved by the Texas Legislature.
