The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 45 calls for service, issued two citations and made three arrests on Sept. 28, 2011.

The SPD received 22, 911 calls.

Arrested by SPD
• Regino Franco, 21 — Theft.
• Rebecca Juarez, 19 — Theft.
• Female Juvenile, 15 — Runaway.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 10 calls for service, served zero civil papers and made two arrests on Sept. 28, 2011.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Rocky Flores, 29, of San Angelo — Warrant/surety withdrawal.
• James Wilson Tollison, 32, of Sweetwater — Warrant/theft by check.

Distinguished Staff Achievement at Angelo State University

The Angelo State University Alumni Association will recognize distinguished alumni, honorary alumni and outstanding faculty and staff during its annual Homecoming Dinner on Friday, Oct. 14, in the LeGrand Alumni Visitors Center, 1620 University Ave.
Sweetwater native Adelina Castro Morales is this year's honoree for Distinguished Staff Achievement, selected for her outstanding service and longstanding dedication to Angelo State University. She is the daughter of Joe and Frances Castro of Sweetwater. Morales and her husband, Alfred, have two sons, David and Adrian, both graduates of ASU.

Have You Filled a Bucket Today?

Sweetwater Christian School proudly announces our first “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” winners. This is a program for children to see how very easy and rewarding it is to express kindness, appreciation and love on a daily basis. “Spotlight on Sweetwater”: Chamber Banquet 2011

The "Spotlight on Sweetwater" radiated during the 47th Annual Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Banquet on Monday night, September 26, 2011 at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex.
The banquet opened with a meal catered and served by the Sweetwater Chuck Wagon Gang. Following the dinner portion, Jacque McCoy, Executive Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the attendees before Judge Tim Fambrough brought the invocation.

2011 Outstanding Young Citizen: Ray Cornutt

Rodney Foster, the previous recipient of the Outstanding Young Citizen award and the incoming Chamber President, was the presenter of the 2011 Outstanding Young Citizen.
"Do you know how hard it is to be outstanding for 365 days?" Mr. Foster joked.
He offered his thanks to the community for his award last year--calling it an honor and humbling, before announcing this year's Outstanding Young Citizen, Ray Cornutt.
"Our recipient has a "can-do" attitude and willingly volunteers every time he is needed," said Mr. Foster about Mr. Cornutt.

2011 Outstanding Female Citizen: Leah Andrews

"It takes all of us working together to make our community great," began last year's recipient Brenda Stirl while making the award presentation, "and I truly am proud to be a part of it."
Before making the announcement, Mrs. Stirl thanked the selection committee, the Chamber and those that submitted the nominations before making the presentation of the 2011 Outstanding Female Citizen, Leah Andrews.
"This award is presented to someone who has made great contributions to the community, church, job and home...and I think [Leah Andrews] has done just that."

2011 Outstanding Male Citizen: Vershell Smith

Last year's recipient of the Outstanding Male Citizen award, Joe Bagby, passed away shortly after receiving the honor. In his absence, Jim Wilks along with Joe's wife, Paula, made the presentation to this year's honoree, Vershell Smith.
Mr. Smith was born in Ballenger, Texas in 1929. He was an honor student, a band member and worked in his father's service station while in high school. He even helped his father keep the service station open 24 hours a day during World War II.

2011 Outstanding Business: Wind Energy Turbine Services

Last year's award winner was Bennett and Associates; David Bennett was on hand to make the presentation of the 2011 Business of the Year to Wind Energy Turbine Services, or WETS.
The company opened its doors in February 2007 under the ownership of Mark Meneses, Larry Martin, Jason Hefner and James McCasland. Since that time, the industry has made nation-wide strides in assisting and contracting with companies for their wind farms.
