Man shot in face

November 17, 2011

A Sweetwater man was shot in the face just before noon on Wednesday according to Sweetwater Chief of Police Jim Kelley. The Sweetwater Police Department was dispatched to 102 Fisher Street around 11:02 a.m. on Wednesday about the shooting.
Kelley stated that officers are still investigating details of the crime, but one man has already been arrested in the case. Danny Johnson was arrested Wednesday, as he allegedly shot at the 21-year-old male victim with a shotgun.

Cox Jewelers closing Abilene and Sweetwater stores

Treasure Hunters Roadshow

An elderly couple cashed in big with their collection at the Treasure Hunters Roadshow at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Sweetwater. The couple brought in a World War II dagger, a number of coins and a few pieces of jewelry. They walked out with about $3,000.

BREAKING: One injured in local shooting

According to emergency authorities, a man walked out of his house on 102 Fisher Street on Wednesday morning, November 16, 2011 when he was apparently shot with what authorities believe was a shotgun. The shot came from a distance. The man is in stable condition and is being transported to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.

RPMH Diabetic Outreach Program to offer blood sugar checks

November is American Diabetes Month, and to acknowledge this Alice Velez from the Diabetic Outreach Program at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be at the health department on Thursday, November 17, from 8 a.m. until noon to check blood glucose and answer any questions you may have regarding diabetes. Pamphlets and materials will be available.

City to Winterize Parks, Cemetery, Campground

As of Nov. 14, 2011, the City of Sweetwater Public Works Department will be winterizing all Parks, Sweetwater Cemetery and Lake Sweetwater Campground restrooms by turning off the water to these facilities for the remainder of the cold season.

Childers found not guilty

November 15, 2011

After five hours of deliberations, around 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15, 2011, a jury found Aubrey Phillip Childers not guilty of sexual assault in the 32nd Judicial District Court.
The final day of the trial began with closing and final arguments starting around 9:30 a.m. Presiding judge Glen Harrison gave the charge to the court of sexual assault to the jury, which was made up of nine women and three men. Mr. Childers had been indicted on a male-on-male sexual assault that occurred around the southwest part of Sweetwater on or around August 15, 2010.

City plans for future

The standing room only crowd at the Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, city commission meeting brought several Tenaska opposers in regards to an agenda item in which city commissioners were to consider potential water supply agreements. The agenda item stated that city commission was to consider potential water supply agreements.
After a closed Executive Session meeting ended and the commissioners came back into regular session, citizens were informed of the decision that there would be "no action at this time."
