Retailers prepare for Black Friday

Retailers are making it even easier this year for shoppers to pull an all-nighter from Thanksgiving Thursday to Black Friday.
The unofficial holiday began in the 1960s to usher in the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, allowing for businesses to move from the "red" to the "black" in their financial records. Today, the rush of the sales and crowds in the stores have allowed for outlets to expand their early-morning hours even into the late night prior to Black Friday.

Robotics teams compete at regional level

Roscoe Collegiate High School and Sweetwater High School competed this past weekend in the BEST robotics regional competition in the Dallas. Event sponsor was the University of Texas at Dallas.
Approximately 1,500 students from 56 teams across Texas and New Mexico came to compete in presentations, exhibits, spirit and sportsmanship, engineering notebooks and robot performance.

Quail population declining, many possible causes

The Nolan County Extension Office and Leadership Advisory Board of the county recently held their annual Interpretive Luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Zach Wilcox, the AgriLife Extension agent for Nolan County, opened the "Making a Difference in Nolan County," lunch by thanking those who assisted in preparing the event and offered a brief overview of the year.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 28 calls for service, issued one citation and made one arrest on Nov. 21, 2011.

The SPD received 16, 911 calls.

• Jason Anderton, 18 — Warrants.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 13 calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on Nov. 21, 2011.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Ector Joe Martinez, 31, of Sweetwater — Warrant/theft by check.
• Jonee Meg Miller, 30, of Abilene — Judgement.

Fire claims home

November 22, 2011

An account has been set up at Texas National Bank for James and Steve Chapman, who lost their home and vehicle to a fire on Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011. The account number is 23590. Nobody was injured in the blaze that firefighters fought at the 1800 block of Hubbard Street around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning. The fire was caused by inattention to a wood burning stove according to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden.

Pre Black Friday sale at Bealls

Bealls in Sweetwater will open at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, for their Pre-Thanksgiving bogo sale. On Wednesday only, everything in the store will be available for buy one, get one for $1. Shown is store employee Charlotte Rogers.

Two dogs available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has two dogs available for adoption.
One of the adoptable pets is a white female dalmatian mix dog from last week’s batch of adoptable animals, as well as a brown and white male chihuahua from last week. According to Sweetwater's new animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.

Sunny weather for Thanksgiving

Work continued at the Nolan County Courthouse on Monday, Nov. 21, despite a thick fog and colder weather. According to the National Weather Service, today will be sunny, with a high near 62. North northwest winds will be between five and 10 mph. Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low around 40. North northwest winds will be around five mph.
Wednesday is expected to be sunny, with a high near 71. South winds will be around five mph. Wednesday night is expected to be mostly clear, with a low around 45 with south southeast winds between five and 10 mph.

Employers can benefit from hiring veterans

The observance of Veteran's Day ushered in joyful celebrations, but with the pomp and circumstance gone, veterans once again see a harsh reality.
Though the national average of unemployment still lingers around 9%, the rate for veterans currently stands higher at 12.1%. The unemployment number is even raised for younger veterans, who are returning from their service in Iraq and Afghanistan, at an astounding 27% for 18 to 24 year olds — almost one in four.
