The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 49 calls for service, issued no citations and made no arrests on Jan. 9, 2012.

The SPD received 59, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 100 block of Lamar.

Calls for service:
• Assault — 1000 block of Oak.
• Theft — 1500 block of James.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 25 calls for service, served no civil papers and made no arrests on Jan. 9, 2012.
Calls for service:
• Domestic disturbance — Main Street, Roscoe.
• Reckless driver — I-20 MM 238 east bound.
• Vehicle accident — I-20 MM 237 west bound.

SEED approves resolution for wind development tax credit

The SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) Board of Directors met for their first meeting of 2012 on Monday morning, Jan. 9 at the Chamber of Commerce.
The board approved a resolution supporting the extension of the Production Tax Credit (PTC) for wind development. Ken Becker, the Executive Director for SEED, noted that this year he will be attending the AWEA (American Wind Energy Association) Washington Day in February, which allows him and others associated with the group to interact with and encourage Congress to take action on the matter.

Victim takes the stand in Castillo case

The first day of testimony in the Julian Castillo trial began on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012 at the Nolan County Courthouse, with the state presenting their whole case and the defense beginning their case by presenting an audio recording.
Castillo is charged with two counts — aggravated sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child — from an incident occurring around May 15, 2002. Opening statements were heard from both the state and defense, 32nd Judicial District Attorney Ann Reed and defense attorney Jacob Blizzard.

Woman’s Forum raises over $1,700 for museum

The Woman's Forum holiday shopping spree, which was held from November to December of 2011 has raised a total of $1,734 after awarding the winner, C.J. Hubbard $500. The Pioneer Museum will receive $867 and the Woman's Forum Civic Improvement and Beautification Fund will also receive $867. One of the Woman's Forum's two main projects is the Pioneer Museum. In the past five years, the Woman's Forum has had several fundraisers and has donated a total of $6,584.

Sexual assault trial underway

A trial began on Wednesday morning, Jan. 11, 2012, in the 32nd Judicial District Court in a case against Julian Castillo for one count of aggravated sexual assault of a child and one count of indecency with a child.
Jury selection began on Tuesday afternoon and continued until around 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening until 12 jurors were chosen for the trial.

County employees honored

The Nolan County Commissioners met for their first regular meeting of 2012 on Monday morning, Jan. 9 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Five county employees were presented with service awards during the meeting. Jeanne Wells was honored for five years of service as a County Auditor Assistant, while 10-year honors went to Israel Vera and Tracy Jeter for serving as a Sheriff's Department Jailer and the Precinct 3 Equipment Operator, respectively.
Recognized for 15 years of service to the county were Sheriff David Warren as well as District Attorney Ann Reed--who was not in attendance.

It’s not too late to get the flu vaccine

If you have not received your flu vaccine this season, the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department encourages you to do so. It’s not too late to get the flu vaccine. The SNCHD is administering the flu vaccine during regular immunization clinic every Wednesday from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-4:30 p.m. and the second Wednesday of each month until 6 p.m. The cost is $20 for adults, Medicare is accepted, $6 per child and the health department accepts Medicaid and CHIPS. Immunization clinic is cancelled on Wednesday, Jan 25, due to immunization staff being out of town for training.

Sandhill Cranes make pit stop in Nolan County

In an open field in Roscoe this week were a swoop of Sandhill Cranes. Hundreds of the birds could be seen among the wind turbines of West Texas. Sandhill Cranes breeds from Siberia and Alaska east across Canada to the Hudson Bay and to western Ontario, with isolated populations in the Rocky Mountains, northern prairies, Great Lakes and in Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida. They spend their winters in California, and from Arizona to Florida. They prefer marshes, prairie ponds and marshy tundra. They are also found on prairies and grain fields during migration.

SNAP building plans discussed

The Sweetwater City Commission met for the first time in 2012 on Tuesday morning, Jan. 10 at City Hall.
A variety of action items were presented at the meeting and approved, including the authorization of city staff to go out for bids relating to the construction of a new dining room and offices for SNAP, the senior nutrition program.
City Manager Eddie Brown gave some background information on the current facility's condition, in that leaks have been seen when precipitation falls. Further inspections found that there were possible problems with the structure.

Damon Chrismer welcomed home from deployment

Members of Trinity Baptist Church in Sweetwater welcomed home one of their own last Thursday afternoon, Jan. 5, 2011.
Damon Chrismer had arrived at the Abilene Regional Airport after serving in Iraq and Kuwait for 206 days. His wife and two children met him at the airport and brought him home to Sweetwater to drive by the church where friends and fellow church members were waiting with balloons and signs the church youth had made to celebrate his arrival.
