A local business is celebrating 40 years of service.
Local Loan and Pawn Shop â€” home of the "upside-down" sign â€” opened its doors to the community on May 15, 1972. The founder, Bill Haley, began his pawn shop experience several years earlier in 1954 through 1955.
By the time Haley opened Local Loan, he was the only pawn shop available in Sweetwater, setting up shop at 211 Lamar. In all, the building was entirely 600 feet.
Steps were made toward the Nolan County Courthouse remediation and the county's jail and office complex during the Nolan County Commissioners' meeting on Monday morning, May 14, 2012 at the Courthouse.
Seven record proposals were submitted following the county's request for proposals for a construction manager at risk for the dual project. The proposals were opened by County Attorney Lisa Peterson and officially received by the commissioners during the meeting.
One in two women and one in eight men over the age of 50 will have complications as a result of osteoporosis. During the month of May, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is participating in Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month by hosting a Lunch and Learn seminar on May 21, that will discuss bone disease.
According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, more than 10 million American women and men suffer from the effects of osteoporosis. In addition, 34 million more are estimated to have low bone mass, leading to increased risk of the disease.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 118 calls for service, issued nine citations and made five arrests from May 11-13, 2012.
The SPD received 56, 911 calls.

On Saturday, May 12, 2012, at approximately 10:28 p.m. officers of the Sweetwater Police Department were dispatched to the 1900 block of Lamar Street in Sweetwater in reference to a male subject who appeared to have jumped off of the bridge that serves as an overpass to Interstate 20 crossing Lamar Street. The top of the bridge is approximately 20 feet above the ground.
The male was identified as a hispanic resident of Sweetwater and it appeared that he suffered a broken left arm. Sweetwater EMS arrived on the scene and the patient was flown to an area hospital via helicopter.
LeAnn Dowdy was recently announced as the 2011-2012 Teacher of the Year at East Ridge Elementary for Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District).
She is a second grade teacher at the school and has been with the district for two years. Dowdy has been teaching for a total of fifteen years; she earned her Bachelor of Science degree through Abilene Christian University and Texas A&M University-Commerce.
Teams of Nolan and Scurry County residents will gather at the Sweetwater High Track and Field on May 18, at 7 p.m. for an overnight Relay against cancer. This yearâ€™s event marks the 10th anniversary of the Relay in Sweetwater. Both Nolan and Scurry County survivors, caregivers and all who wants to fight back against cancer are invited to join the Sweetwater event this year.
The Sweetwater High School Band recently participated in the Directorâ€™s Choice Music Festival in Dallas. They played their three competition pieces from the recent UIL contest in Abilene. The Mustangs earned a superior rating from all three judges, along with a â€śBest in Classâ€ť trophy and a â€śBest High School Band of the Contestâ€ť trophy. Sweetwater outscored a Texas 5A school in order to win their final trophy.
The 2011-2012 Leadership Sweetwater class graduated and participated in a ceremony on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at Texas State Technical College.
