The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 56 calls for service, issued eight citations and made no arrests on Sept. 12, 2011.

The SPD received eight, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Information only — 900 block of Circle Drive.
• Theft — 100 block of E. Fifth.
• Theft — 100 block of S. Hopkins Road.
• Duty to register — 200 block of E. Fourth.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had three calls for service, served no civil papers and made four arrests on Sept. 12, 2011.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Olajuwon T. Calhoun, 23, of Lewisville — Warrant/surety withdrawal.

Tenaska donates to robotics program

Tenaska recently gave a $2,500 donation to the BEST robotics program. The program kicked off at Texas State Technical College on Saturday. Participants were introduced to the game where rules were reviewed and a demonstration was provided before entry kits were distributed to each school. Area schools involved include Sweetwater, Roscoe and Highland.

Darrell Campbell continues to improve after shooting

The Snyder police officer and former Sweetwater police officer recovering from a gunshot wound to the head is making steady progress.
Corporal Darryl Campbell is still in a Lubbock rehab center. Friends and family say his recovery has been miraculous. Snyder Police Chief Terry Luecke says members of the police force visit him often and it lifts everyone's spirits to see him doing better.
Campbell was able to make an appearance at an August concert held in his honor. He has been slowly regaining speech and motor skills.

RPMH offers free cholesterol screening

September 13, 2011

September is National Cholesterol Education Month and to acknowledge this occasion Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital Lab will be at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department (SNCHD), located at 301 E. 12th, on Thursday, Sept. 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to offer free cholesterol screening.

Luncheon held for Rep. Susan King

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 150 calls for service, issued 23 citations and made nine arrests from Sept. 9-11, 2011.

The SPD received 26, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a building — 400 block of E. New Mexico.
• Theft — 600 block of Jack Lambert.
• Family violence assault/failure to report felony — 500 block of Newman.

Arrested by SPD
• Male juvenile, 13 — Assault, class A.
• Ashley Lopez, 25 — Warrant.
• Tabatha Decker, 18 — Warrant.
• Mary DeLeon, 33 — Warrant.
• Fernando Ramirez, 22 — Warrant.

Four earthquakes hit the Big Country

An earthquake rattled portions of the Big Country early Sunday waking some people up a little earlier than they expected.
The U.S. Geological Survey reports a magnitude 4.4 earthquake shook the ground about 7:30 a.m. Sunday. Its epicenter was 11 miles northeast of Snyder. The 4.4 magnitude makes it the largest earthquake to occur in the Big Country in the last few years.
According to the USGS, people report feeling the earthquake from as far away as Irving, San Angelo, and Lubbock.

SISD plans Grandparents Day lunches at campuses

In honor of Grandparent’s Day on Sunday, Sept. 11, the following Sweetwater ISD campuses are inviting grandparents to eat lunch on the following days.
East Ridge Elementary will host grandparents on Tuesday, Sept. 13. On Wednesday, Sept. 14, Sweetwater Intermediate will be open to grandparents.
The Kindergarten classes at Southeast Elementary will have grandparents to lunch on Thursday, Sept. 15, while the Southeast First Grade students and J.P. Cowen Early Childhood Center campuses will be open on Friday, Sept. 16.

Leadership Sweetwater class begins Sept. 13

The 2011-2012 Leadership Sweetwater class will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 13. The class will start the year with orientation at TSTC. Orientation will be facilitated by Melissa Howard.
Leadership Sweetwater is a nine-month course that educates the students about the inner workings and sometimes little-known facts about Sweetwater and the region. Each month the class will attend a different session. The course ends in May with a graduation ceremony and meal. The program is sponsored by the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce.
