Tens of thousands of families mourn the loss of loved ones each year to a variety of diseases. Adding to the heartbreak, their death could have been prevented if proper vaccinations were administered.
August is National Immunization Awareness Month and as the month approaches, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) wants to remind families and individuals in the community to catch up on their vaccinations. This is especially important as the new school year begins.
Three months into his tenure as Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s new head football coach and athletic director, the hiring of Shane Mobleyâ€™s coaching staff is complete.
In addition to Mobley, there will be six new faces on the sidelines this fall.Also, three new coaches have been hired at Sweetwater Middle School.
Zach Harrell and John Ward came on board as the new offensive and defensive coordinators, respectively, not long after Mobley was named to replace Craig Slaughter in mid-April.
Early voting for the July 31, run-off primary election will begin on Monday, July 23, in the County Clerk's office â€” located at the Nolan County Courthouse (100 East Third), Suite 108 â€” from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The last day of early voting is Friday, July 28.
On the day of the runoff primary election â€” Tuesday, July 31, the polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
This year's eighth grade students and teachers at SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) will be reaping the benefits of a major technological shift that will change the educational outlook of the entire district.

Two people died and three were injured in a one-vehicle rollover at around 12:45 p.m. on Friday, July 20, 2012, in Sweetwater.
A traditional weekly family outing turned tragic when Kimberly Troutz Guynn was driving a 2005 GMC Suburban east bound on Interstate 20 mile marker 240 west of Sweetwater.Â Guynn was following another family vehicle when she began exiting the interstate and then abruptly swerved to re-enter the interstate. The driver over corrected to the left and the vehicle overturned. There were four generations of family in this vehicle.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 24 calls for service, issued no citations and made three arrests on July 19, 2012.
The SPD received 73, 911 calls.

August 18 â€” on the year that marks the 32nd Annual Tejano Music Awards, Zeravla Entertainment announces Anjelique has once again been nominated for Best New Female Artist. Anjelique was nominated last year and made it all the way to the top five nominee ballot. Since the age of 15, Anjelique has been representing West Texas as a female artist. In December of 2011 Anjelique re-released her debut album, Regresa A Mi, with two original bonus tracks. She was voted as one of the Top 12 by the Tejano Music Industry. â€śI was surprised, excited and honored,â€ť says Anjelique.
Another phone scam has hit the Sweetwater area.
Hubery O'Pry shared that he recently received a phone call that showed up on his Caller ID as a private caller. He was informed that he was eligible to apply for a card to help with his medical expenses from the Medical Services Group, based in Atlanta, Georgia.
The caller told O'Pry that in order to obtain the card, he would need to share his information over the phone. O'Pry, however, said that he already has a card that assisted with his expenses through Medicare and Medicaid.
Numerous citizens headed to the Nolan County District Appraisal Office on Thursday morning, July 19, 2012 in protest of the increase of tax values. An employee of the office noted that the high number of protesting citizens came as a surprise; the heavy traffic in the office is expected to continue for the next couple of days.
