TXU Energy launches first iPhone® app

It’s a one-two punch to the competition from TXU Energy and its work with smartphones. Today, the company announced the launch of the TXU Energy Mobile App for the iPhone®. With this release, TXU Energy becomes the first and only electricity retailer in Texas to offer its customers mobile access to their accounts through an app for the iPhone, iPad®, and iPod touch®. It’s also the latest innovation in the company’s ongoing efforts to connect customers across the state with online and mobile solutions to support the ways they use and manage electricity.

Average gas prices decrease

In Texas the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline dropped five cents according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. The national average also dropped five cents. This is the fourth week in a row gasoline prices have dropped and the average cost of gasoline in Texas is 31 cents less than it was a month ago.
The statewide average is $3.58 and the national average is $3.73.  The Texas statewide average is 15 cents below the national average.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 50 calls for service, issued four citations and made two arrests on June 8, 2011.

The SPD received 26, 911 calls.

• Blinda Cabrera, 36 — Warrants.
• Raymond Balderas, 60 — Solicitation.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 10 calls for service, served three civil papers and made no arrests on June 8, 2011.

• Traffic hazard — I-20 MM 258 west bound.
• Fire — I-20 MM 254 west bound.
• Court Bailiff — County Court at Law.
• Grass fire — I-20 MM 272 west bound.

Reporter receives special visitors

The Sweetwater Reporter welcomed special visitors from Mrs. Jenna Hayes’ fifth grade class at Sweetwater Intermediate School. The class received a tour of the building on their last week of school and learned about what it takes to get a newspaper out daily.

Highland student selected for Lone Star Leadership Academy

Kevin Pantoja, son of Felix and Aida Pantoja and a student at Highland Middle School in the Highland Independent School District, has been selected to travel to the Houston/Galveston area as a participant in Education in Action's Lone Star Leadership Academy, July 11-15, 2011. Kevin's selection for the Academy was based on his outstanding academic success, demonstrated leadership ability, a recommendation by his counselor, Rebecca Rees, and his involvement in school and community activities.

Local input sought at community USDA meeting

The USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Nolan County Soil and Water Conservation District invite the public and any agencies with an interest in conservation issues to participate in a local work group meeting to be held at the Maryneal Community Center in Maryneal, Texas. This meeting will be on June 13, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. 
The purpose of this meeting is to receive input from a broad range of local agencies, organizations, businesses and individuals that have an interest in natural resource conditions and needs in Nolan County.

• Family violence assault, impede breath/circulation. — 200 block of W. Louisiana.

• Billy McQueen, 23 — Warrants.
• Troy Jennings, 41 — Accident involving damage, hit/run.

Food pantry receives $1,000 donation from Tenaska

Gaylord's Pantry, the Sweetwater and Nolan County food pantry that provides emergency food supplies to Sweetwater and Roscoe area families in need, has received a $1,000 donation from Tenaska, Terry Hendley has announced.
"On behalf of First United Methodist Church and the Ministerial Alliance, I want to thank Tenaska for this generous contribution to our food pantry organization," he said. "This donation will help provide needed nutrition to hundreds of families in our region."

Veteran outreach workshop planned

Goodwill West Texas will host a Veteran Outreach Workshop for veterans, spouses of veterans, surviving spouses of veterans and those who have been honorably discharged.
The informative workshop is planned for 1-5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at the Texas Workforce Commission building in Sweetwater, located at 1105 Bell Street (the old PPI building).
