Car involved in local shooting being investigated in Abilene

The DPS car involved in the fatal shooting last weekend is in Abilene.
The car was examined on Friday and will be sent to Austin for further investigation into the shooting death of Jesse Torres.
Torres stole a truck in Runnels County before leading authorities on a high-speed pursuit into Sweetwater.
The case is being investigated by the Texas Rangers.

Statewide gas price average decreases two cents

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas is $3.46, two cents less than the average last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.

Eighth Annual Fashions for the Cure to benefit Cancer Services Network

ABILENE, Texas – Planning is underway for Village Boutique’s Eighth Annual “Fashions for the Cure” style show benefiting Cancer Services Network, a Nolan County United Way agency.
Festivities are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, at the Abilene Civic Center. Enjoy fall's latest looks and an outstanding runway fashion show. Tickets are $30 per person. There will be a silent auction, entertainment, hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.

Vehicle registration fee structure to see massive overhaul

A massive overhaul of the vehicle registration fee structure is about to get underway, and it's important Nolan County residents understand what's happening and why.
Beginning Sept. 1, more than 1,700 registration fee categories are reduced to nine weight classifications that create a more equitable, standardized and simpler registration fee system.

High winds cause damage

A storm packing high winds blew through Sweetwater on Thursday afternoon, leaving a trail of damage behind.
Winds toppled power lines on Interstate 20, temporarily closing the highway. The roof of 7-11 along Interstate 20 was blown off into the Highland Heights United Methodist Church parking lot and a wreck also occurred on Interstate 20 about the same time. The interstate was blocked for some time due to the downed power line.

Pittman denies sideline access

The Sweetwater Reporter was recently denied sideline access to Sweetwater Mustang home football games by Sweetwater Independent School District Superintendent Terry Pittman. Ron Howell, sports editor for the Reporter, was contacted this past Monday by Pittman and told that the Reporter would not be allowed to have its contract photographer on the sidelines for the game. However, Pittman would not reveal the reason for this decision to Howell.

Gilbert wins prize package

Laura Gilbert’s name was drawn as the winner of the Texas Rangers Prize Package from Meek Blood Center. The prize package included four tickets to see the Rangers play the L.A. Angels on Aug. 26, a one night hotel stay and a $50 debit card. Laura is a mail carrier and a two gallon donor with  Meek Blood Center.

USDA reminds producers of sales closing date

Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, urges producers who want to purchase coverage through the Noninsurable Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) to do so before the sales closing date of Sept. 1, 2011.
NAP provides financial assistance to producers of noninsurable crops when low yields, loss of inventory or prevented planting occur due to normal disasters.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 50 calls for service, issued three citations and made no arrests on Aug. 24, 2011.

The SPD received 19, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 300 block of E. Avenue A.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 1000 block of View.
• Criminal trespass — 600 block of Pecan.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had four calls for service, served five civil papers and made no arrests on Aug. 24, 2011.

Calls for service:
• Court Bailiff — County Court at Law.
• Stranded motorist — I-20 east bound.
• Illegal dumping — CR 105.
