TxDOT to host open house style public meeting

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, will host an open-house style public meeting for the development of the Texas Rural Transportation Plan 2035. This plan will identify the transportation needs for all modes in rural Texas through 2035. In addition, the plan will include a prioritized list of highway projects that will allow TxDOT to focus its limited planning funds on the most needed highway projects.

Ford honored for 27 years of service at SISD

East Ridge Elementary School faculty and staff celebrated the 27 years of service of Roseanna Ford to Sweetwater ISD and East Ridge Elementary in a retirement reception held for her in the East Ridge Elementary library complex. Mrs. Ford was joined by her family, friends, faculty and staff to honor and thank her for her years of service.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 44 calls for service, issued one citation and made one arrest on Feb. 22, 2012.

The SPD received 15, 911 calls.

Arrested by SPD:
• Merced Flores, 30 — Public intoxication.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 12 calls for service, served no civil papers and made one arrest on Feb. 22, 2012.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Shawn Lee Swanson, 22, of Ft. Worth — Warrant/motion to revoke probation.

Jaques nabbed again on similar charges

A Sweetwater man who was arrested for disorderly conduct after peeping over bathroom stalls in south Abilene restaurants was arrested on similar charges last weekend at ACU.
Officials at ACU confirm 40-year-old Jeremy Jacques was arrested for criminal trespassing by ACU police after he was found crawling out of the bathroom window of a female dormitory.
Jacques was taken to the Taylor County Jail and was released after posting $1,000 bond.

APD Bomb Squad finds cell phone in suspicious package

The Abilene Police Department Bomb Squad robot destroyed a suspicious package in Sweetwater Wednesday afternoon.
"It was taped up with some black electrical tape and athletic tape, and did not have a proper label on it," said Det. Lance Richburg of the Sweetwater Police Department.
Sweetwater PD called in the Abilene Police Department Bomb Squad after a postal employee picked it up at the Nolan County Courthouse and brought it to the post office.
"Once the postal employee began looking at the package more closely, he became concerned and left it in the parking lot," Richburg said.

SPD releases racial profiling statistics

The 2011 racial profiling statistics for the Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) were presented during the February 2012 regular meeting of the City Commission by Sweetwater Police Chief Jim Kelley.
According to the written report, racial profiling is defined as "a law enforcement-initiated action based on an individual's race...rather than on the individual's behavior or on information identifying the individual as having engaged in criminal activity [and] pertains to persons who are viewed as suspects or potential suspects of criminal activity."

Adopt a Mustang for softball program underway

The "Adopt-A-Mustang" program is back again. Lady Mustang Softball players have decided to take part in the program starting Thursday, Feb. 23, for the Varsity tournament. The program is designed to let students from kindergarten through sixth grade "adopt" a high school athlete. Students have the chance to adopt a Lady Mustang varsity softball player. Registration is still $25, and students will get a t-shirt and button with their adoptees name and picture. And because the varsity players are in such high demand, students can adopt the same Lady Mustang if they want.

Award winning historian to speak on Saturday

APD Bomb Squad robot destroys package

A tense situation was diffused in front of the Sweetwater Post Office after an Abilene Police Department bomb squad robot destroyed a suspicious package this afternoon.
Officials in Sweetwater were reportedly on heightened awareness following the presence of several protesters outside the Nolan County Courthouse yesterday and its close proximity to the post office.
The package reportedly contained a cellphone.
There were no injuries.
