Wet road causes wreck

The Sweetwater Fire Department responded to a one-vehicle rollover on Saturday morning when the driver of an 18-wheeler lost control of the vehicle on the wet road, according to Sweetwater Emergency Services Manager Grant Madden. The driver was headed west bound on Interstate 20 when the vehicle lost control and went through the center median before resting on the other side of the interstate. No transports were made and the trailer of the 18-wheeler was empty.

Four inches of rain falls in Sweetwater

Sweetwater received much needed rain over the weekend totaling 4.00 inches, which was more than most Big County cities received.
Brownwood received the most rain at 5.21 inches. Also receiving abundant rain was Ballinger with 2.7 inches, Brady with 2.75 inches, Haskell with 2.87 inches, Throckmorton with 4.75 inches, Coleman with 2.44 inches, Clyde with 2.94 inches, Rotan with 2.62 inches and Albany with 3.50 inches.

Local Girl Scouts collecting yogurt lids for breast cancer

The local Girl Scouts are collecting pink Yoplait yogurt lids for the Susan G. Komen foundation for the cure for breast cancer. The Save Your Lids 2012 Challenge is a service opportunity through the Girl Scouts of Texas-Oklahoma Plains.
In 1912, Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scout movement. In 1927, she died of breast cancer. To honor her memory and in celebration of the 100th birthday of Girl Scouts, GS-TOP challenges each Service Unit to collect 1,912 pink Yoplait lids. For each lid that is donated, Yoplait will donate 10 cents to the Susan G. Komen foundation.

Local tattoo artists bring home awards

Sheri and Hunter Crawford just returned from the 13th Annual Texas Tattoo Roud-Up held in Dallas, Texas from Sept. 16-18. Hunter won his second trophy (Top Three Artist's Choice Best Traditional Small) for a boat motor he tattooed on Sheri — a boat motor strategically placed on her chest. Hunter won his first trophy at the San Angelo show in 2010. Sheri brought home four awards more to add to her collection. She won one of the Top Three Artist's Choice in Photo Realism and Patriotic categories and two of the Top Three Artist's Choice in the Unusual category.

SFD sees first female applicant in years

Tiffany Hill, longtime resident of Sweetwater and Roscoe High School graduate was one of many applicants to take the entrance exam for a place at the Sweetwater Fire Department. According to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden, 44 signed up to take the test. Only 33 of those showed up to take the written exam and 27 passed the test to go on to the physical agility test the next day. "Tiffany did exceptionally well, but fell just short of the time limit.  She never gave up and completed the course where much bigger men did not finish the course," said Madden. 

Power lines cause fire

The fire department responded to a grass fire this week just west of the Nolan County complex fire that happened a few months ago. The fire was small and contained quickly thanks to the quick response of the Sweetwater Fire Department. Sweetwater Fire Department’s new brush truck, Brush 6 responded along with Brush 5. The fire was started when high winds caused the power lines to get together. Shown is Sweetwater firefighter Pat O’Neal extinguishing the blaze.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 40 calls for service, issued no citations and made two arrests on Oct. 6, 2011.

The SPD received 19, 911 calls.

Arrested by SPD
• Richard Long, 22 — Possession of marijuana.
• Kenneth Randle, 51 — Warrant.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had seven calls for service, served one civil paper and made one arrest on Oct. 6, 2011.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Steve Alex Lopez, Jr., 23, of Sweetwater — Taylor County warrant/surety withdrawal.

Calls for service:
• Reckless driver — I-20 MM 249 east bound.

Mustang Band makes top ratings

Last Saturday the Sweetwater High School Band participated in the Buckaneer Band Festival in Breckenridge. Sweetwater was one of only three bands to earn a top rating at the contest. They received “1s” from all three judges and also won “Best Overall Colorguard” of the competition. Finally, sophomore clarinetist Chrysten Ivy was named “Most Outstanding Soloist” of the entire event.

SRPC to host Sight-In Day, awards scholarship

The Sweetwater Rifle and Pistol Club is sponsoring their second Rifle Sight-In Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011. Anyone going deer hunting next month will need to sight-in their rifle and are welcome to attend. SRPC will furnish the sight-in targets and man power to help sight-in firearms. Statewide gas price average decreases seven cents

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas is $3.20, seven cents less than the average last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. 
The national average is $3.39, six cents less than last week.  The statewide average price is 19 cents less than the national average. The most expensive gasoline average in the state is in El Paso at $3.33. Ft. Worth is reporting the least expensive average in the state at $3.07 for a gallon of regular unleaded. Sweetwater’s gas is currently $3.38 a gallon.
