SRPC to host Sight-In Day, awards scholarship

The Sweetwater Rifle and Pistol Club is sponsoring their second Rifle Sight-In Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011. Anyone going deer hunting next month will need to sight-in their rifle and are welcome to attend. SRPC will furnish the sight-in targets and man power to help sight-in firearms. The range entrance is just off Loop 170 (west of town) on Avenger Field Road to TSTC. For more information, call Carroll Kearney at 325-235-7572.

Statewide gas price average decreases seven cents

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas is $3.20, seven cents less than the average last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. 
The national average is $3.39, six cents less than last week.  The statewide average price is 19 cents less than the national average. The most expensive gasoline average in the state is in El Paso at $3.33. Ft. Worth is reporting the least expensive average in the state at $3.07 for a gallon of regular unleaded. Sweetwater’s gas is currently $3.38 a gallon.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 47 calls for service, issued two citations and made two arrests on Oct. 5, 2011.

The SPD received 10, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a motor vehicle — 1500 block of James.
• Burglary of a motor vehicle — 1500 block of Josephine.
• Theft — 2200 block of E. Broadway.
Arrested by SPD
• Male juvenile, 16 — Possession of a dangerous weapon.
• Danielle Rodriguez, 23 — Criminal trespass.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had six calls for service, served one civil paper and made one arrest on Oct. 5, 2011.

Sweetwater sees rash of car burglaries

Sweetwater has recently fallen victim to a rash of vehicle burglaries in the northeast side of town. According to Sweetwater Chief of Police Jim Kelley, the burglaries began on Sunday, being the night with the most vehicle burglaries so far at 15 reported that evening. On Monday, four vehicle burglaries were reported and two vehicle burglaries were reported on Tuesday. Two were reported last night. Reports came from the 1700 block of Hailey, 1500 block of E. 12th, 1400 block of James, 1500 block of James, 1500 block of Josephine and the 1600 block of Grand.

Highland teacher is Region 14 Elementary Teacher of the Year

This is the first year Highland chose to participate in the Texas Teacher of the Year selection, and their teacher, Tammy Carper, was chosen as Elementary Teacher of the Year for Region 14.

USDA Farm Service Agency increases guaranteed loan limit

Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Farm Loan Manager Justin B. Holland announced that the loan limit for the Guaranteed Loan Program will increase to $1,214,000. The limit is adjusted annually based on the "Prices Paid to Farmers Index," compiled by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

Two events planned for this year’s Round-Up for Rehab

For the second year in a row, there will be two back-to-back fundraising events associated with the Round-Up for Rehab in Sweetwater to raise dollars for the West Texas Rehabilitation Center. A Shrimp Peel dinner and auction will be held at the Nolan County Annex on Tuesday evening, Oct. 25, the night before the sale at Sweetwater Auction which will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 26.

First responders, firefighters to be honored at appreciation dinner

A Firefighter's and First Responder's Appreciation Dinner and Silent Auction will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011 at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex starting at 6 p.m. It will be sponsored by the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce.
The event will serve two purposes: to honor all area firefighters and first responders for their tireless efforts in protecting the community and to raise funds for the groups as well.
"We are honoring all first responders in Nolan County with a complimentary dinner for them, their spouse and the children living at their home," said event coordinators.
