Natalie Cox, Alejandro Gamez, William Hardin, Keegan Von Atzigan and Kala Wofford participated with their artwork in the Visual Art Scholastic Event held at Abilene High School over the weekend. They received four superior ratings and two excellent ratings.

On Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, the Sweetwater Police Department received a report of a burglary that occurred at a residence located in the 900 block of Mulberry Street in Sweetwater. It was reported that sometime between Friday, Jan. 3, 2014 and Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014 an unknown person(s) used force to enter a building that is located on the said property. Once inside, the thieves took numerous firearms, firearm accessories and ammunition having a combined value of approximately $9,000.
February is American Heart Month, to observe this occasion Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department (SNCHD), located at 301 E. 12th, on Thursday, Feb. 27, from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to offer free cholesterol screening. There will be pamphlets and information available on cholesterol.
The health department will be closed on Monday, Feb. 17, for Presidentâ€™s Day.
The Muscular Dystrophy Association will be issuing â€śarrest warrantsâ€ť for many executives and community leaders in Sweetwater, Colorado City, Roscoe, Loraine and other surrounding areas on Wednesday, Feb. 19.Â As members of the areaâ€™s â€śMost Wantedâ€ť these jailbirds are going to be â€śLocked Upâ€ť to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the families they serve.Â They have all been charged with having a big heart and are heavily armed with kindness! Their sentence is to serve one hour of â€śhard timeâ€ť at MDAâ€™s jail site, the Sweetwater Fire Station, between the hours of 10 a.m.
The city of Sweetwater will remain in Stage 1 of the Drought Contingency and Water Conservation Program, as noted at Tuesday's City Commission meeting.
City Manager Eddie Brown reviewed the quarterly assessment of the Oak Creek Reservoir and city's well field system, in which the recommendation to remain in Stage 1 was given by Enprotec/Hibbs and Todd. Brown explained that because not as much water is sold this time of the year, a change in stage would not be necessary.
The 2014 Miss Snake Charmer Tea was held at Java Jax on Sunday, Feb. 16. Ten contestants will be competing for the title of Miss Snake Charmer 2014. The March 4 primary election will be here before we know it, but several other deadlines are fast approaching.
The first day of early voting will be Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, in the County Clerk's office, which is located in the Nolan County Courthouse (100 East Third), Suite 108. The last day of early voting will be Friday, Feb. 28.
Friday, Feb. 21, is the last day for the County Clerk to receive an application to vote by mail.
On Election Day on Tuesday, March 4, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Representative Susan King hosted the Sweetwater Jaycees (Junior Chamber of Commerce) from Monday, Feb. 10 through Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the Texas State Capitol Outdoor Rotunda. For the eighth year in a row, Rep. King arranged for her colleagues in the House to get an up close and personal view of life in West Texas. The Sweetwater Jaycees took over duties of the Rattlesnake Roundup 52 years ago and have made been coming to the Capitol a tradition.
A woman was flown to an Abilene hospital in stable condition on Friday morning by Air Evac after a wreck on Interstate 20. It took members of the Sweetwater Fire Department 30 minutes to extricate her from the vehicle.
