Eskota Road Rail Terminal planned to open near SW

USA Rail Terminals announces the planned opening of “Eskota Road Rail Terminal” located to serve the Cline Shale, Wolfcamp and the Eastern Shelf of the Permian Basin. It is the only rail terminal location in west Texas that has the unique capability of accessing two Class 1 railroads, the BNSF and the UP. Located five miles east of Sweetwater and north of Interstate 20 on Eskota Road, this location is one of a kind for west Texas. Phase 1 will include some five miles of new track with additional track being added in later phases.

Choral Booster Club to have car wash fundraiser Saturday

The Sweetwater Choral Booster Club will have a car wash fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, at Mustang Car Wash, located at 1351 Hailey Street. A full service detail and wash will be provided.
All proceeds will benefit the Sweetwater Middle School and Sweetwater High School choirs for their upcoming festival trips.

Expect mostly cloudy conditions tonight, with a low around 47 and east-southeast winds around 10 mph.
We'll have some rain chances throughout the entire weekend, ranging from 20 to 30%. Expect highs in the mid-60s/lower 70s, with lows in the mid-40s. Winds will remain from the east-southeast through Sunday evening, until they shift to the north-northeast.

NCUW Charles Roberson Memorial Golf Tournament set for May 17

The Nolan County United Way's Charles Roberson Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2014, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start at the Sweetwater Country Club.
The tournament will benefit Nolan County United Way's nine local agencies: Big Country Medical Reserve Corps, Boy Scouts, Cancer Services Network, Gateway Family Services, Girl Scouts, SNAP, Sweetwater BackPack Buddies, West Texas Children's Advocacy Center and Women's Resource Center.
Pre-registration fees are $200 per team or $50 per individual. The cost to register at the tournament will be $240 and $55, respectively.

SISD teacher presented with Julia L. Young Award

Sharrie Lyon, certified teacher of the visually impaired, was presented with the Julia L. Young Award in Austin, Texas on March 28, 2014, by the Texas Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired. This prestigious award is in honor of Julia L. Young, who provided leadership in the development of the visually handicapped children’s program of the Texas commission for the Blind. This award is presented annually to an individual who has done outstanding work with visually impaired children in Texas.

Cub Scouts visit newspaper office

Third graders with the Bear Den Pack 146 toured the Sweetwater Reporter office to learn about the daily operations of the local newspaper.

FUMC to host community Bingo night

First United Methodist Church is hosting a community Bingo Night this Saturday, April 5, from 7-9 p.m. in their fellowship hall.
The event is free and open to everyone in the community, and they have many fun prizes they will be giving away for the winners.

In preparation for tornado season, Sweetwater Christian School is practicing a bad weather drill in their safe room.
This is a uniquely designed room with 12-inch steel reinforced walls to provide a safe place for children and staff.
