Local girls set up lemonade stand to benefit Berry Family

Two local girls, Ayezha DeLeon (left) and Marissa Johnson (right), both 10 years-old, set up a stand to sell pickles and lemonade with the help of DeLeon’s mother, Diane Little. The girls wanted to raise money to help with funeral expenses for the Berry Family, who recently lost their family member, Michael Berry. Johnson said that he was a friend and he “was like a family member to us.”
The girls started making the stand around 6:30 a.m. on Friday and set up shortly after on Hiawatha Street. By about 4:30 p.m. they had raised about $75.

Local man remembered as loving father, grandfather, caring friend

Sweetwater resident 50-year-old Michael Berry will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend as many are mourning his death after an hours-long standoff took place in Sweetwater on Thursday.
Sweetwater Police Chief Brian Frieda confirmed that 50-year-old Michael Berry was shot and killed by officers after Berry fired shots at them.

One transported in wreck

One person was transported to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital with non life threatening injuries after a wreck on East Broadway this morning just before 8 a.m.
According to emergency authorities, the vehicle shown was traveling east on Broadway when it hit a truck that was towing a trailer.

Police: Sweetwater standoff suspect shot, killed, after firing at officers

Update: Sweetwater Police Chief Brian Frieda confirms that 50-year-old Michael Berry was shot and killed by officers after Berry fired shots at them.
Frieda says it was members of the Abilene Police Department's SWAT team that were forced to shoot Berry after the suspect in an early-morning theft opened fire on the officers. Abilene PD was called to help with the situation early Thursday afternoon after Berry brandished a gun in a threatening manner towards Sweetwater officers, according to Frieda.

Sweetwater music series kicks off July 11 with Hope Shiver

The Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium, with partial funding from the Texas Commission on the Arts, announced the “Applause” Music Series, which kicks off with a summer preview of the series on July 11, with “Voices of Hope,” staring International performer, Hope Shiver.
Designed to bring a new level of musical arts to Nolan County, the “Applause” Music Series will feature incredible performances with memorable themes.
With “Voices of Hope,” Shiver will take the audience down a journey with portrayals of famous heroines Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth and Sissieretta Jones.

TSTC awards scholarships to area high school students

Texas State Technical College has awarded scholarships to 39 high school students from ATEMS, Blanket, Breckenridge, Colorado City, Cisco, Early, Gorman, Graford, Hamlin, Jim Ned, Loraine, Roscoe and Sweetwater. The scholarship recipients have all completed a Marketable Skills Award (MSA) through dual credit with TSTC in Digital Media, Health Information, Computer Programming, Software and Business Accounting, Computer-Aided Drafting or Welding. The college hopes the scholarship will enable the students to continue their education to an associate degree.
