Girl Scouts present gift to KXOX

Girl Scouts from Troop #7118 made a special presentation on Friday morning to Jeff Stein, owner of KXOX AM/FM. During a reception for the radio station's 75th anniversary in November, the Girl Scouts had listeners write well wishes for the station on Post It Notes. Those notes were put together with an article about the anniversary and made into a poster.

Flu reaches epidemic levels

Just ahead of the normal height of the flu season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) already reports that the flu has already reached epidemic levels in the U.S. Helping Nolan County stay healthy, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is encouraging everyone age six months and older to get vaccinated.

Weekend weather for Sweetwater

Today will be sunny with a high near 63. Winds will be from the south-southwest at 10 to 15 mph.
Expect mostly clear skies tonight, with a low around 40 and southern winds at 10 to 15 mph.
This weekend, we're looking at highs in the mid to upper 60s and lows in the upper 30s which could reach 40. Winds will change from the south-southwest on Saturday night to become northern winds, shifting back to the south and southwest by Sunday.

VIDEO OF THE DAY: 2015 Oscar Nominations Announced

Neil Patrick Harris will host the Academy Awards on February 22 and the list of who will be nominated for an Oscar has been announced. Grand Budapest Hotel and Birdman lead the nominations list with nine each. Meryl Streep nabbed her 19th nomination, and Bradley Cooper earned his third consecutive acting nod. Four Brits were nominated this year in the Best Acting categories, Felicity Jones has been nominated along with fellow British actress Rosamund Pike and Eddie Redmayne and Benedict Cumberbatch.

City Commission approves SEED-sponsored coliseum sign

The Sweetwater City Commission approved a request Tuesday by Ken Becker for Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED) to enter a contract with the Nolan County Coliseum Complex to construct a new sign at the intersection of Elm and Broadway.

School board recognizes robotics team

January 15, 2015

The Sweetwater B.E.S.T. (Bettering Engineering Science and Technology) Robotics team was recognized for their 2014 achievements by the SISD Board of Trustees Tuesday. At the local competition held at TSTC in October, the SHS B.E.S.T. team swept every category with either a first or second place showing. At the national-regional level, SHS was also formidable, placing second out of 60 schools in the Engineering Notebook category and sixth place overall for Robot Performance.

SHS students donate to fellow student who lost her house in recent Sweetwater fire

January 14, 2015

Students Paige Anderson, Callie Boswell and Michelle Perez were saddened to find out that their classmate Emily Bloomquist lost her home on Jan. 4, to a fire. In an effort to support their classmate, the students contemplated hosting a bake sale, asking students to donate clothing and donating gift cards until they settled on sponsoring a penny drive at the high school campus.

SHS, ASU partner for dual credit program

January 14, 2015

Representatives from Sweetwater High School and Angelo State University announced Tuesday that students attending SHS can now enroll in classes offered by ASU, a four-year university located in San Angelo.
