National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) is an annual observance to highlight the importance of protecting infants from vaccine-preventable diseases and celebrate the achievements of immunization programs in promoting healthy communities. This yearâ€™s NIIW is April 18-25. Infants are particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases; that is why it is critical to protect them through immunizations. Each day, nearly 12,000 babies are born in the United States who will need to be immunized against 14-vaccine-preventable diseases before age two.
Tyler Stevenson, owner of Sweetwater's Eskimo Hut, cuts the ceremonial ribbon at his store's grand opening Friday. Eskimo Hut is located at 411 East Broadway. Representatives from the City of Sweetwater, SEED, the Chamber of Commerce and Roscoe State Bank also attended the ribbon cutting.
The Sweetwater Jaycees participated in the Don't mess with TexasÂ® Trash-Off annual cleanup on Saturday, cleaning their two mile stretch of adopted highway in Sweetwater along Highway 70 South. The Trash-Off encourages Texans across the state to join forces and clear Texas roadsides of trash.
The Nolan County Commissioners Court met today at the courthouse for what was a short, routine session.

Senior Nutrition Activities Program (SNAP) Director Tonya Challis said she expects a great turnout at the organization's annual Taste of Sweetwater event, which will be held Monday from 5:30 until 7:30 at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex.
With the month of April designated as Autism Awareness Month, one local business wants to bring attention to the cause with a community fundraiser.
From 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, Hampton Inn of Sweetwater, located at 302 SE Georgia, will have a come-and-go event for residents to stop by and make donations toward Autism Speaks. Autism Speaks was founded in 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright, grandparents of a child with autism, and has become the world's leading autism science and advocacy organizations.

Kaylee Martin, a senior at Highland High School, won Champion Junior Market Barrow at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.Â She is a Nolan County 4-H and Highland FFA member.Â Because of her accomplishment, she was awarded a $10,000 scholarship.
