County declared disaster area

After pulling an all-nighter battling local wildfires, the Nolan County Commissioners met for a special meeting on Monday morning, June 20, 2011.
Only two actions items were presented at the brief meeting, but the main purpose of the gathering was to approve the extension of the disaster declaration and prohibition of outdoor burning in Nolan County for one more week.

Hospital awards scholarships to local high school seniors

Four Nolan County high school seniors have received scholarships in the amount of $1,200 each for the upcoming school year through the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) Nursing Scholarship Fund. The fund, established three years ago, has provided thousands of dollars to local students to help them achieve higher education in the field of healthcare.
Three scholarship recipients are from Sweetwater High School and include Cassandra Diaz, Christian Richardson and Genea Cherry. Roscoe High School senior Melanie Diaz also received an award.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 139 calls for service, issued four citations and made three arrests from June 17-19, 2011.

The SPD received 146, 911 calls.

• Duty upon striking an unattended vehicle — 600 block of Jack Lambert.
• Family violence assault — 600 block of Canfil.
• Family violence assault — 1100 block of Oak.

Arrested by SPD:
• Shawn Lents, 30 — Criminal trespass.
• Christian Reyes, 37 — Warrant.
• Timothy Delacruz, 18 — Public intoxication.

Family loses home to fire, account set up

June 20, 2011

A local family lost their home and its entire contents to a fire on Saturday, June 18, 2011, at 1401 Avondale. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but is thought to have originated in the family's carport, according to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden. The blaze was contained due to the efforts of many firefighters and local law enforcement officials assisting.

Joint law enforcement center discussed

During the City Commission meeting at City Hall on Tuesday morning, June 14, a special, joint session was held between the City Commission and Nolan County Commissioners on the possibilities of constructing a new law enforcement center.
No public input was allowed, but residents who were in attendance for the city meeting were invited to sit in on the talks among the local officials.

Roscoe VFD in need of donations

Due to the dry conditions and recent surge in wildfires, the Roscoe Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) is in need of assistance.
The Ladies Auxiliary of the Roscoe VFD is now establishing a drive to restock the firefighters' Recovery Supplies Program. "All items are greatly appreciated in this time of need," said drive organizers.
Items needed include all flavors of Gatorade, Chap-Stick, wipes, Visine eye drops, sunscreen and hand sanitizer. Drop off sites for the items are located at the Sweetwater Wal-Mart and Roscoe City Hall.

RCHS students receive awards

Seven Roscoe Collegiate High School students received the "Texas Student Achievement Award" from the Texas ACT Council for their performance on the PLAN (Pre-ACT) Assessment. These students are on target to meet or exceed ACT's College Readiness Benchmarks by graduation. ACT's College Readiness Benchmarks are empirically-based and identify the level of achievement necessary in English, mathematics, reading and science to have a successful college freshman experience.

The SPD received 30, 911 calls.

Arrested by SPD:
• Rita Chase, 55 —Warrants.
• Michael Gutierrez, 18 — Warrant.
• Stephen Getty, 56 — Disorderly conduct.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, served four civil papers and made no arrests on June 16, 2011.

Calls for service:
• Traffic stop — I-20 MM 238.
• Fire — W. Alabama.

Tenaska negotiates for Stamford water

The Jones County town of Stamford has announced it's in contract negotiations with Tenaska, the coal power electric plant being designed for Sweetwater.
In a news conference Friday afternoon, Stamford Mayor Johnny Anders, Junior said they are negotiating to sell waste water and excess city water for the proposed Trailblazer Energy Center.
There have been concerns amongst the community about selling the water to Tenaska, but Mayor Anders said it will do nothing but benefit the town and the plant.

TNB supports Wounded Warriors

Texas National Bank (TNB) in Sweetwater is joining efforts in a national cause — supporting our wounded warriors.
Texas National Bank Assistant Vice President, Liz Howard, as a part of a management development program which promotes team building, is in charge of the local campaign to involve the community to raise money for the national program. This campaign will benefit the Wounded Warriors Alliance.
