Nolan County names new AgriLife Extension agent

SWEETWATER – Tasha Baxter was named the new Texas AgriLife Extension Service agent for family and consumer sciences in Nolan County. Her appointment was effective Sept. 19.
The announcement was made by Nolan County Judge Tim Fambrough and Scott Durham, AgriLife Extension administrator for the West Central District.
The new agent will be headquartered in the AgriLife Extension offices at 100 East 3rd Street, Suite 305 in Sweetwater.

Woman’s Forum to hold membership tea

The Woman's Forum is encouraging women in the community to attend a membership tea to be held on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011 at the County-City Library, located at 206 Elm Street, from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Membership in the Forum, organized in 1950, is open to any woman interested in promoting the acquaintance and mutual helpfulness among women, and to aid in civic and intellectual improvements. Forum projects promote the County-City Library, the Pioneer Museum and other beautification and civic improvement projects. Forum dues are $15 for organizations and $7 for individual membership.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 56 calls for service, issued four citations and made no arrests on Sept. 22, 2011.

The SPD received 22, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — 1000 block of W. 8th.
• Forgery — 400 block of E. New Mexico.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, served one civil paper and made no arrests on Sept. 22, 2011.

Calls for service:
• Loud music — Blackwell area.
• Suspicious person — CR 137.
• Grass fire — FM 608.
• Stray livestock — I-20 MM 252 west bound.
• Stray livestock — CR 175.

New Future Sweetwater class begins

The Future Sweetwater class of 2012 started their program on Wednesday morning at Texas State Technical College in Sweetwater. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, the program is designed for students to learn in a hands-on, interactive environment which allows them to have fun and bond while they learn and problem solve. The Future Sweetwater program follows the same basic setup and curriculum as Leadership Sweetwater, but is geared towards the youth.

Chamber Banquet is Monday

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will hold its 47th Annual Membership Banquet on Monday, Sept. 26, at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex. The theme for this year's banquet is "Spotlight on Sweetwater".
There will be eight spaces open for businesses to "spotlight" their products/services. It is first come, first serve. There will not be a fee — however, you must be registered. Please call the Chamber for more information and registration.

Ludlum Measurements donates to BEST robotics program

The BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) Robotics competition recently received a donation from Ludlum Measurements, a major sponsor of the program. Don Ludlum, Larry Ludlum and Richard Smola of Ludlum Measurements are shown presenting the check to BEST Steering Committee members Joni Coons, Austin Mullins and Director Terry Blankenship. The next round of competition will take place on Saturday, Oct. 15, for Practice Day at the Sweetwater TSTC (Texas State Technical College) campus.

Statewide gas price average decreases six cents

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas is $3.38, six cents less than the average last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. 
The national average is $3.56, also six cents less than last week.  The statewide average price is 18 cents less than the national average.  The most expensive gasoline average in the state is in Amarillo at $3.47.  Ft. Worth is reporting the least expensive average in the state at $3.30 for a gallon of regular unleaded. Sweetwater’s gas price is currently $3.48 for a gallon of regular unleaded.

The SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) Board of Directors held a regular meeting on Monday evening, Sept. 19, 2011 at the Administration Building.
A public hearing took place concerning the FIRST Rating report, though no one was in attendance to offer input. A brief overview on the report was given by SISD Business Manager Nathan Elhert, citing specific indicators within the report that regarded the district.

Letting your grass go is not a huge loss, since grass can be re-seeded without a huge cost. However, replacing trees and large shrubs can be very expensive.
