Fire burns 1500 acres while Texas wildfire conditions worsen

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — With much of the state covered in parched, brown grass and brush, Texas Forest Service is warning residents who live along and west of the I-35 corridor to be prepared for dangerous wildfires this week.
Weather conditions are expected to worsen on Wednesday and Thursday as a low pressure system moves over a dry line hovering over the Western Plains. Wind speeds are expected to pick up and relative humidity levels are expected to drop — two key ingredients for dangerous fire weather.

Snakes at the Capitol!

Members of the Sweetwater Jaycees took nine rattlesnakes to show off at the Capitol Wednesday and Thursday to promote the Sweetwater Jaycees World's Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up which will be held March 11-13, in Sweetwater. The Jaycees visited with Representative Susan King and Governor Rick Perry and promoted rattlesnake safety and awareness. County to replace security equipment

The Nolan County Commissioners' Court met for its regular meeting on Monday morning, Feb. 14 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Various approvals were made at the meeting regarding equipment, including replacing the current Guardian courthouse security equipment with a new system from Centurion Wireless security systems.

Fire consumes 400 acres

A large grass fire in Fisher County burned about 400 acres on Monday afternoon according to authorities. Smoke filled the air in Sweetwater, due to yesterday's high winds. No residences were lost, but a number of barns and horse pens were lost due to the flames burning the tall, dry grass. Authorities say that there were two separate fires burning in the area and the cause of the fires in unknown.

Sweetwater hosts “Godspell” musical production

Sweetwater’s historic Municipal Auditorium will host a live Broadway musical on Saturday evening, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. when “Godspell” takes the stage.
“Godspell” is a production of Abilene High School’s drama department and choir, and is directed by Clay Freeman. Freeman was Sweetwater High School’s drama director in the 1970s and took Sweetwater students to second place in state theater competition in 1973.

Miss Snake Charmer contestants meet for tea

The 2011 Sweetwater Jaycees Miss Snake Charmer Scholarship Pageant contestants met on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at Texas State Technical College for a tea and learned the ins and outs of the pageant. The annual pageant will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 10, at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium. This year, the Jaycees will have $2,500 in scholarship money available to the winners. A total of $1,250 will be awarded to Miss Snake Charmer while $600 will be presented to the first runner-up. The second runner-up will receive $400 and the talent competition winner will receive $250.

SISD's 2010 NCEA higher performing schools recognized

The National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA), a department of ACT, Inc., recognized Sweetwater Independent School District for having three schools in their district make the 2010 NCEA Higher Performing Schools List. The following schools received the honor and Higher Performing (HP) recognition in the following areas:
• Southeast Elementary School, Math and Reading - Higher Performing in all areas;
• Sweetwater Intermediate School, Math and Reading;
• Sweetwater Middle School, Social Studies.

Local alumni teams looking for players

Texas Alumni Football is coming to the Abilene area in April. Former high school players from Sweetwater and other neighboring schools are expected to put on the pads again with former teammates to comprise up to 12 alumni teams. The games are open to all alumni and the ages of the players will likely range from nineteen to mid-forties. Alumni teams will play an alumni team from their rival school.

ABILENE, TX — Keller Williams Realty Plano Market Center announced that McClure, REALTORS & Calvin & Co. Real Estate joined the company, bringing 24 agents with them. The office will continue to operate under the Plano Market Center brand out of 3157 South 27th in Abilene. The integration of the new agents into the Keller Williams Realty office was effective February 1, 2011.

Chamber, CARR to provide shuttle at Round-Up

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will again be furnishing a shuttle bus that will travel to the Nolan County Coliseum from the hotels and motels, and from the South side of Nolan County Courthouse, Saturday, March 12 and Sunday, March 13 during the Rattlesnake Round-Up.
City and Rural Rides (CARR) will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and continue every hour until the last pick up is made at the Coliseum at 5 p.m. On Sunday, the shuttle will start at 9 a.m. and run every hour until the last pick up at the Coliseum at 4 p.m. There is no charge for riding the shuttle.
