The Nolan County Commissioners met for their regular meeting on Monday morning, Nov. 28, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Two presentations were given regarding county capital improvement financing from Specialized Public Finance Inc. and Coastal Securities.
Two representatives with Specialized Public Finance Inc. gave a walk through of the financing process. Several parties are involved in the matter, including a financial advisor, bond counsel, an underwriter, paying agent, credit rating agency and credit enhancement companies.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 101 calls for service, issued 39 citations and made seven arrests from Nov. 25-27, 2011.
The SPD received 33, 911 calls.

Several Gold Star Awards were presented during the SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) Board of Trustees meeting on Monday evening, Nov. 21, 2011 at the Administration Building.
The Gold Performance Acknowledgment awards recognize school districts and campuses that have attained high performance indicators. However, the standards have been raised by 5%, making the award harder to come by.
SHS (Sweetwater High School) was given a Gold Star for Commended Performance in Social Studies; SMS (Sweetwater Middle School) also achieved Commended Performance in Social Studies.
Jeff Lay, right, sign technician in the Nolan County maintenance section, is presented a Certificate of Service by Lauren GarduĂąo, P.E. Lay, a 15-year employee with the Texas Department of Transportation, was honored for his longevity during a recent supervisors meeting in Abilene. In addition to the framed certificate, he received a 15-year service pin and an ice chest, his gift of choice. GarduĂąo is the Abilene District Engineer.
Christmas is a special time and many people show their pride by lighting their yards and homes. The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce wants to reward the best of the best.
The Chamber will be sponsoring the annual residential lighting contest for the Sweetwater and Roscoe communities. A group of judges will drive around town Dec. 12-14, to judge all homes entered in the contest with Christmas decorations and lights on display.
The Woman's Forum is sponsoring a $500 cash Christmas shopping spree raffle. Tickets are $1 each and may be purchased from any Woman's Forum member, by calling 235-8756 or at the Sweetwater Elks Lodge Annual Christmas Craft Show at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex. The event is open to the public starting Saturday, Dec. 3, at 10 a.m. and running until 6 p.m., and on Sunday, Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The drawing for the prize will take place on Sunday, Dec. 4, on the last day of the Christmas Crafts Show, at 1 p.m.
David Warren will seek another term as Sheriff of Nolan County. Sheriff Warren was elected in 2008 and took office as Nolan County Sheriff on Jan. 1, 2009. Warren has served as Sheriff for the past three years and will run for re-election in 2012. âThe current Sheriffâs Office is one that is centered on service and based upon integrity and professionalism. My staff and I would appreciate the continued opportunity to work hard for the citizens of this county and see that it stays that way.â stated Warren.
The West Texas Children's Advocacy Center has once again partnered with Wal-Mart to provide a way for many children in the area to have a better Christmas. This year's tree is called Amy's Angel Tree, in honor of Amy Rainey, a victim of domestic abuse. Amy first brought the idea of an Angel Tree to the WTCAC eight years ago. She knew the value of giving during the holiday season.
Sara "Abigail" Lynch, daughter of Ralph and Kelly Lynch of Sweetwater, Texas, has been selected as a candidate in the 2011 Miss Teen of Texas Scholarship and Recognition Pageant to be held at the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel in San Antonio, Nov. 25-27.
The winner of the pageant competition will receive a $1,000 cash scholarship and a $500 U.S. Savings Bond. The new State Titleholder will also be eligible to compete for the National Title of Miss Teen of America and vie for additional scholarships, awards and prizes.
