Firefighters battle blaze near Lake Trammell

Area firefighters were still battling a large blaze on Saturday afternoon in Nolan County near Lake Trammell. The fire began around 2 p.m. on Friday, June 10, 2011, near a barn just off of County Road 145, near Camp Boothe Oaks according to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden. According to the Texas Forrest Service, 500 acres have already been burned. The Sweetwater Fire Department lost a truck during the blaze. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by Nolan County authorities.

Updated dress code announced for SISD

The Sweetwater Independent School District recently completed a process which included public input, surveys and a committee of students, parents, teachers, principals and administrators to come up with an improved dress code for Sweetwater ISD schools. "We began with a public forum months ago where the students modeled standard attire. Although standard attire did not receive the majority of votes, a definite majority supported change," stated Assistant Superintendent Kathy Smartt. "The committee worked diligently to address the specific concerns of sagging and cleavage. The key will be consi

Nolan County's money is already hard at work. 
The Nolan County United Way has distributed their first allocation for the year. This year there are nine agencies receiving funds: The American Red Cross, Gateway Family Services, SNAP (Senior Nutrition Activities Program), Back Pack Buddies, WTCAC (West Texas Child Advocacy Center), Cancer Services Network, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and Women's Resource Center.

Average gas prices decrease

In Texas the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline dropped five cents according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. The national average also dropped five cents. This is the fourth week in a row gasoline prices have dropped and the average cost of gasoline in Texas is 31 cents less than it was a month ago.
The statewide average is $3.58 and the national average is $3.73.  The Texas statewide average is 15 cents below the national average.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 50 calls for service, issued four citations and made two arrests on June 8, 2011.

The SPD received 26, 911 calls.

Arrested by SPD:
• Blinda Cabrera, 36 — Warrants.
• Raymond Balderas, 60 — Solicitation.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 10 calls for service, served three civil papers and made no arrests on June 8, 2011.

• Traffic hazard — I-20 MM 258 west bound.
• Fire — I-20 MM 254 west bound.
• Court Bailiff — County Court at Law.
• Grass fire — I-20 MM 272 west bound.

Reporter receives special visitors

The Sweetwater Reporter welcomed special visitors from Mrs. Jenna Hayes’ fifth grade class at Sweetwater Intermediate School. The class received a tour of the building on their last week of school and learned about what it takes to get a newspaper out daily.

Highland student selected for Lone Star Leadership Academy

Kevin Pantoja, son of Felix and Aida Pantoja and a student at Highland Middle School in the Highland Independent School District, has been selected to travel to the Houston/Galveston area as a participant in Education in Action's Lone Star Leadership Academy, July 11-15, 2011. Kevin's selection for the Academy was based on his outstanding academic success, demonstrated leadership ability, a recommendation by his counselor, Rebecca Rees, and his involvement in school and community activities.
