Donations to the 30th annual Spirit of Christmas Food Drive are still being accepted as the drive moves into its final weeks.
The drive will feed more than 14,000 families in Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana. The food drive is sponsored by Brookshire Grocery Company stores and various service organizations.
"Many families receive assistance through this effort, and every single donation counts,â€ť said Sam Anderson, community involvement manager for BGC.
National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) is a national observance that was established to highlight the importance of continuing influenza vaccination, as well as fostering greater use of flu vaccine after the holiday season into January and beyond. NIVW is the week of Dec. 4-10, 2011.
The health department wants to encourage residents to use preventive actions:
â€˘ Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
Following the annual Sweetwater Christmas parade scheduled for Monday evening, Dec. 5, Santa will be on hand to pose for pictures with the kids in the lobby of the Texas Theater. This year because of the abundance of personal cell phones and cameras, parents will be allowed to take pictures with their own camera or cell phone camera. A small donation of $5 will be requested to help with the restoration and operation of the Theatre.
Tickets to win an authentic autographed Dallas Cowboy football helmet will also be available. It will be given away on Dec. 19.
David Bennett, President of the Nolan County Board of Realtors, presented Ken Becker, Vice President of Sweetwater Goodfellows with a check for $500.Â Sweetwater Goodfellows provides food and toys to local needy families with children and food to needy individuals during the Christmas season.Â This Saturday, Dec. 3, Goodfellows will have its annual toy drive at Wal-Mart from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.Â Last year Sweetwater Goodfellows helped more than 907 individual in Nolan County. Please help the Goodfellows make this year even better.

Information leading to the arrest of Jesus Alberto Villegas of Abilene, this monthâ€™s featured Texas 10 Most Wanted fugitive, will bring tipsters up to $12,500 cash.
Sweetwater Animal Control currently has four pets available for adoption.
One of the adoptable pets is a black and brown female mixed breed dog. Another is a black and white female mixed breed dog. The brown dog available is a male terrier mix and the cat available is a white and orange female long-haired breed. According to Sweetwater's new animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 43 calls for service, issued no citations and made two arrests on Nov. 30, 2011.
The SPD received 18, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had seven calls for service, served one civil paper and made three arrests on Nov. 30, 2011.

In July of this year, Abilene radio station Power 103 announced that ProScout, a talent scouting company, would be visiting Abilene looking for models, actors and good talent. Company reps go from state to state looking for talent.
The Nolan County Hospital District Board of Directors met for their regular monthly meeting on Monday evening, Nov. 28, 2011 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH).
The board meeting opened with a discussion of a possible change to the May uniform election date to November. RPMH Administrator Donna Boatright, along with the Nolan County Clerk Pat McGowan, led the discussion on what potential possibilities and options were available.
Pio MuĂ±oz, right, was the top finalist in the Nolan County Truck Roadeo for TxDOTâ€™s Abilene District and was recognized by District Engineer Lauren GarduĂ±o, P.E. MuĂ±oz, a maintenance section assistant, earned the right to represent his maintenance section in the district-wide Roadeo held recently in Abilene and competed against 33 other drivers. The Texas Department of Transportation sponsors the annual Roadeo as part of the fleet safety training. The drivers are tested on several skills involving vehicle inspection, backing, stopping, docking and other safe driving habits.
