Academic UIL competitors going to regional

April 15, 2011

Sweetwater High School UIL district winners qualified for the regional competition and will travel to Texas Tech University on Saturday, April 16, to compete in the regional competition. Weidman is Artist of the Month

Dr. Elaine Weidman is the Artist of the Month for April at the County-City Library. She has lived in Sweetwater for over 13 years with her husband, Rick Weidman who teaches at Sweetwater ISD.
Dr. Weidman and her husband originally met in Albuquerque, NM and say that fell in love at first sight. Six months later they were married, and have been married for over 17 years now. Mr. Weidman, mentioned that Dr. Weidman was a former Ms. Alabama in her younger years. Dr. Weidman retired after 35 years from her profession as an anesthetist. She also has her PhD in Health Care Management.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 34 calls for service, issued two citations and made three arrests on April 13, 2011.

The SPD received 11, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 2000 block of Lamar.

Arrested by SPD:
• Faun McArthy, 22 — Purchase/furnish alcohol to a minor.
• Gabriel Gonzalez-Leal, 38 — Purchase/furnish alcohol to a minor.
• Ravon William, 19 — Warrants.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had seven calls for service,

served four civil paper and made two arrests on April 13, 2011.

Kiwanis Club supports SISD students

The Kiwanis Club of Sweetwater opened the latest school board meeting with a check presentation.  Annually the club honors local talent with an opportunity to participate in Star Search and the proceeds benefit the A’s R Us program. The Kiwanis Club began and continually support both programs for the local students. Pictured are Kiwanis Club members Bill Haley and Billie Berry representing a check in the amount of $1,500 to SISD School Board President Jeanie McPherson.

Nolan County celebrates NPST Week

National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is celebrated every year the second full week of April. It is to honor the men and women who work as dispatchers or 9-1-1 operators and the endless hours of service they provide to the residents of our county. This year's week of appreciation began April 11 and will continue until April 17.

Highland OAP goes to area contest

Highland High School's One-act play sf The Fastest Woman Alive advanced from District Competition on March 29.  The play by Karen Sunde is published by Dramatic Publishing and tells of the WASP (Women’s Air Corp Service Pilots) who were stationed in Sweetwater during WWll. The story highlights the accomplishments and heartaches of these brave women and of one of their primary leaders, Jackie Cochran.

No action on new lake leases

The standing room only crowd at the recent April 5 hearing regarding the new lake lease paled in comparison to the 20 who attending the City Commission meeting on Tuesday morning, April 12 at City Hall.
On the agenda, the commissioners were to consider and take action regarding the expired lake lot leases at Lake Sweetwater and Oak Creek Lake. After the 45-minute closed Executive Session meeting ended and the commissioners came back into regular session, citizens were informed of the decision that there would be "no action at this time."

Many attend Taste of Sweetwater

Over 430 people attended the annual Taste of Sweetwater on Monday, April 11, at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex, benefitting the Senior Nutrition Activities Program (SNAP). Many local restaurants featured their specialties for the public to enjoy. Many door prizes were also given during the event. Over $3,000 was raised at the event.
