September 27, 2011

The Nolan County Commissioners met for a regular meeting on Monday morning, September 26, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
A public hearing took place regarding the District Clerk's record management archives plan. Patti Neill, who serves in the respective role, briefed the commissioners on the continued collection of a $5 fee which is used to digitize records.
No input was offered; thus the public hearing was closed. Approval was then given for the records management archives plan.

Standing Up Against Prostate Cancer

September 27, 2011

SWEETWATER, Texas – One in six men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime, making it the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men in the United States. Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) wants to make sure men in Nolan County over the age of 50 talk with their physician about annual prostate screening.
“Almost all men diagnosed with prostate cancer survive if the disease is caught at an early stage. That is why screenings are so important,” said Dr. Larry McEachern at RPMH. “Many men are unaware that a simple blood test is a common method of screening.”

Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.)

September 26, 2011

So many of the stereotypes associated with bikers are of the negative kind. The Hells Angels MC are usually only in the news for something involving violence or worse, and the popular TV show Sons of Anarchy doesn't help the biker image either. Bikers tend to be avoided and are assumed to be violent individuals, and even worse when in a group. The general population only see leather clad, bandana-wearing, tattooed men and women that are loud, heavy drinkers, use colorful profanity and participate in all forms of debauchery.

Flowers greet the Autumn equinox

September 26, 2011

Technically, the Autumn equinox didn’t officially start until about 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, but the temperature said otherwise that morning. Inez Walker of Sweetwater called that morning to let us know she had a beautiful bunch of flowers we just had to come and look at. She got the seeds from her church and decided to plant them in the backyard. Inez calls them Moon Flowers, because they start blooming late at night. A friend of hers calls them Angel Trumpets, and you can certainly see the resemblance. Whatever they’re called, they smell wonderful and they look lovely.
