The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 58 calls for service, issued 12 citations and made two arrests on May 18, 2011.

The SPD received 21, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 1000 block of Oak.
• Family violence assault — 1400 block of Grand.
• Family violence assault — 1000 block of Grand.
Arrested by SPD:
• Paul Trevino, 30 — Driving while license invalid.
• Bradley Gardner, 21 — Warrants.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had five calls for service, served six civil papers and made two arrests on May 18, 2011.

Mayor, commissioners sworn in at city meeting

May 19, 2011

The Sweetwater City Commission met for its regular session meeting on Tuesday morning, May 17 at City Hall.
Opening the meeting was the swearing in of the Mayor and two City Commissioners. Greg Wortham will continue to serve as Mayor, while Larry May and Ricky Castro will serve as City Commissioners in Precincts 1 and 3, respectively.

SFD donates new helmet to local hero

The Sweetwater Fire Department recently bought and presented Gorman volunteer firefighter Matt Clark with a new helmet. Clark suffered from first degree burns to his face and third degree burns to his hands when he rescued a fellow firefighter during a large fire in Gorman in April of this year. Clark's helmet was dropped and destroyed in his retreat from the fire. Shown from left to right are Sweetwater firefighters Richard Acuña, Todd Donham, Matt Clark, Brad Payne and Billy Villanueva.

West Texas Art Guild pieces displayed at library

The May art exhibit at the County-City Library is the artwork of the West Texas Art Guild. The members displaying their work are Karen Burt, Glenda Gentry, Carolyn Walker, Pamela Walker, Ann Jennings, Estelle Howard, Judy Hill, Leada Wood, Linda Rupard and Christina Andrews.
The West Texas Art Guild is located in Colorado City. Members come from Colorado City, Big Spring, Roscoe, San Angelo, Sweetwater, Snyder and other surrounding communities. The group promotes art in several ways.

Calls for service:
• Family violence assault — 1000 block of Elm.
• Arson — 600 block of Jack Lambert.

Arrested by SPD:
• Moises Acosta Fajardo, 39 — Public intoxication.
• Cody Taylor Baer, 23 — Public intoxication/resist arrest.
• Robert Anthony Velasquez, 29 — Class B theft.
• Male juveniles (two) — Possession of marijuana in a drug free zone.

Turbine technicians receive training at TSTC

May 18, 2011

Texas State Technical College recently gave a class to six wind turbine technicians from WETS (Wind Energy Turbine Services, Inc.) in Sweetwater. The 16-hour class offered four hours of lecture and 12 hours of hand-on training on TSTC's mobile training unit. The Wind Energy Safe Access and Rescue class is recommended for persons who need to work at height on wind turbines and who need a method of rescue and evacuation.

David Padilla pled guilty to Judge Glen Harrison during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Monday, May 16, 2011, to possession of a controlled substance, namely dihydrocodeinone, a third degree felony. The date of offense was Jan. 27, 2010. For his plea, Padilla received five years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, probated for five years. He will have to pay a fine of $3,500, $384 in court costs and $280 in restitution to the Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Laboratory in Abilene. He will also have to serve 240 hours of community service.

Dr. Smola honored for BCMRC service

On March 3, 2011 at the regular monthly meeting of the Big Country Medical Reserve Corps (BCMRC), a special recognition dinner was held for Dr. Jerry Smola. He has served as the BCMRC's first coordinator for the past three years.
In January 2008 the director of the Nolan County Health Department, Don Ware, and Dr. Smola began to plan with the local law enforcement, Rolling Plains Hospital, local Fire Department and the local Emergency Reaction Team to establish a MRC for the area.

NCF awards 30 scholarships

Members of the Nolan County Foundation Board are pleased to announce the awarding of thirty $1,000 scholarships to Spring 2011 Nolan County high school graduates. In making the announcement, NCF President Jerry Riggs noted that this year's recipients have increased the total number of awardees to 136 since the Scholarship Golf Classic was started seven years ago.
This year's golf classic was named in honor of one of the NCF founders Jere Lawrence. One of Jere's projects for the NCF was assisting Nolan County high school graduates to attend any Texas college or university.
