The Sweetwater Reporter welcomed special visitors from Mrs. Jenna Hayesâ€™ fifth grade class at Sweetwater Intermediate School. The class received a tour of the building on their last week of school and learned about what it takes to get a newspaper out daily.
Kevin Pantoja, son of Felix and Aida Pantoja and a student at Highland Middle School in the Highland Independent School District, has been selected to travel to the Houston/Galveston area as a participant in Education in Action's Lone Star Leadership Academy, July 11-15, 2011. Kevin's selection for the Academy was based on his outstanding academic success, demonstrated leadership ability, a recommendation by his counselor, Rebecca Rees, and his involvement in school and community activities.
The USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Nolan County Soil and Water Conservation District invite the public and any agencies with an interest in conservation issues to participate in a local work group meeting to be held at the Maryneal Community Center in Maryneal, Texas. This meeting will be on June 13, 2011 at 10:30 a.m.Â
The purpose of this meeting is to receive input from a broad range of local agencies, organizations, businesses and individuals that have an interest in natural resource conditions and needs in Nolan County.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 46 calls for service, issued one citation and made two arrests on June 7, 2011.
The SPD received 25, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 11 calls for service, served four civil papers and made two arrests on June 7, 2011.

Gaylord's Pantry, the Sweetwater and Nolan County food pantry that provides emergency food supplies to Sweetwater and Roscoe area families in need, has received a $1,000 donation from Tenaska, Terry Hendley has announced.
"On behalf of First United Methodist Church and the Ministerial Alliance, I want to thank Tenaska for this generous contribution to our food pantry organization," he said. "This donation will help provide needed nutrition to hundreds of families in our region."
Goodwill West Texas will host a Veteran Outreach Workshop for veterans, spouses of veterans, surviving spouses of veterans and those who have been honorably discharged.
The informative workshop is planned for 1-5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at the Texas Workforce Commission building in Sweetwater, located at 1105 Bell Street (the old PPI building).
Lupe Bermea of Sweetwater has been growing a cactus for over 12 years now in her back yard and it has grown to 12 feet. She received the cactus from a family member who brought it to her as a gift.
Bermea did state that this past winter with the below zero temperatures, some lower sides of the cactus have been killed. Other than that, it has been doing great.
The cactus blooms yellow flowers during the months of May through June. It grows about a foot a year, as long as weather conditions remain reasonable during the winter time. She credits part of it to the rich soil of Sweetwater.
The sound of cardio equipment and iron clinking fills the air. The smell of exercise floor mats is like a catalyst which ignites one's desire to push themselves through a sweat-inducing workout. The gym is a great place to get in shape and better your physical health, but you don't have to have a club membership to be physically active everyday.
The students of Sweetwater Christian School are displaying their art work at the County-City Library on the bulletin board in the children's area for the month of June. The students were treated to a book reading from Library Director Becky Brock. The hours for the library are Monday from 1-6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
