SEED discusses budget

The Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED) Board of Directors met for their meeting on Monday morning, July 11, 2011 at the Chamber of Commerce building.
A winning bid for the 88 acre road construction was awarded to Epic Construction of Abilene and approved by the board. David Todd from Enprotec/Hibbs & Todd oversaw the bid selection and made the presentation.

Road construction begins next week

A contractor for the Texas Department of Transportation will begin resurfacing 6.4 miles of SH 70 in Nolan County south of Sweetwater the week of July 18.
The project should be completed by mid-fall, weather permitting, said Mary Beth Kilgore, Abilene District public information officer.
This project will resurface and improve the portion of SH 70 from I-20 to almost two miles south of FM 1809. Motorists are urged to drive with caution and should be prepared for frequent changes in the routing around the construction zone, including at night.

The ‘Blues’ coming to JavaJax

JavaJax Live Music Venue announces an upcoming blues music performance by Blues Boy Willie. The event will be held on Saturday evening, July 16.

Family of police shooter speaks out

Snyder police officer, Corporal Darryl Campbell remained in critical condition Thursday after a near fatal gunshot wound to the head.
According to family and Snyder police however, Corporal Campbell continued to make improvements.
Those included slightly opening his eyes, moving both sides of his body, and apparently being weened off medication in hopes that he will fully wake-up.
During the recovery process at University Medical Center in Lubbock, there are officers with Corporal Campbell 24/7.
While he remains at the hospital, the support back home in Snyder has continued to grow.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 56 calls for service, issued seven citations and made two arrests on July 13, 2011.

The SPD received 20, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — 1200 block of E. Broadway.
• Assault — 100 block of S. Hopkins Road.
• Theft — 300 block of Lamar.
• Theft — 1800 block of E. Avenue A.
• Theft — 100 block of S. Hopkins Road.
• Theft — 700 block of SW Georgia.

Arrested by SPD:
• Michael Woodward, 55 — Warrant.
• Manuel Adames III, 27 — Warrants.

Campbell remains in critical condition

July 14, 2011

The Snyder police officer who was shot in the head Tuesday remains in critical condition this morning.
Corporal Darryl Campbell was injured during a shootout early Tuesday morning in Snyder.
Staff at University Medical Center in Lubbock say Campbell is responding to sound and able to squeeze staff members' hands when asked.
A trust fund is set up to benefit the family. Donations can be made through American State Bank in Snyder.
On Wednesday, police identified the shooter as Dwayne Birmingham of Snyder, who was shot and killed by another officer on the scene early Tuesday morning.

Stamford mayor speaks on Tenaska deal

The City of Stamford will maintain long-term water security and gain needed new revenue through the City’s sale of excess water and treated wastewater to the energy company Tenaska, in an agreement City Council members unanimously passed at a special meeting held Tuesday, July 12. Under the agreement, the City would supply a portion of the water sought for the Tenaska Trailblazer Energy Center under development East of Sweetwater, Texas.

County law enforcement center discussed

A series of awards were presented during the Nolan County Commissioners' Court meeting on Monday morning, July 11, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Eight individuals were honored with Nolan County service awards for up to 15 years of service with the county. Those honored with five years of service were John Womble as Precinct #4 Equipment Operator and Kevin Buchanan and James Villanueva as Sheriff's Department Patrol Deputies.

Diabetes Outreach group visits Nolan County Courthouse

The Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital Diabetes Outreach Program sponsored a free screening on Wednesday, July 13, at the Nolan County Courthouse, giving diabetic and cholesterol screenings and checking blood pressure. At left, Patti Neill has her blood pressure checked by Helena Beltran.
