Grand Jury hands down indictments

March 24, 2011

A total of 13 indictments were handed down by the Nolan County Grand Jury on Tuesday, with seven of those indictments sealed.
Lucas Anderson Turner was indicted for indecency with a child by contact, a second degree felony. Court papers state that the child was younger than 17 years of age. The date of offense was March 7, 2011. His bond was set at $12,000.

J.P. Cowen Pre-K students receive free dental screenings

Dr. Gilbert Carreon, DDS, and his employees were at the J.P. Cowen Early Childhood Center to perform free dental screenings on Pre-Kindergarten students on Wednesday. The Sweetwater Kiwanis Club sponsored the event and members were also on hand to give the children new toothbrushes and toothpaste. The children watched a video on how to brush their teeth before their screening. Shown is Dr. Carreon giving a dental screening. Kiwanis President Bill Haley is also shown. Also at the event were Mary Lou Carreon, RDA; Trish Rains, Receptionist; and Melissa Lee, RDH.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 31 calls for service, issued one citation and made no arrests on March 22, 2011.

The SPD received 19, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had six calls for service, served four civil papers and made three arrests on March 22, 2011.

• Alan John Fleming, 41 of Rising Star — Warrant/motion to revoke probation.
• Edward Arellano, 24 of Snyder — Warrant/capias pro fine and motion to revoke probation.

Storage unit burned

The Sweetwater Fire Department responded to a fire on Musgrove Street on Tuesday. A storage unit, owned by a private owner, caught fire and sent flames and smoke high into the air, also causing a grass fire a block away on Neff Street. Due to a downed power line that was still "hot" firefighters had to use their ladder truck to extinguish the storage unit fire. The storage unit was near Pickrell Wrecker Service and the business sustained only minor damages. Everything that was in the storage unit — including a vehicle and a recreational vehicle — was destroyed by the fire.

Walker indicted for Jan. stabbing

Shayqualpa Rene (Shay) Walker was indicted on Tuesday by the Nolan County Grand Jury for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a first degree felony. The charges stemmed from the January stabbing of Carvin Coy Lemmons.
Sweetwater Police officers responded to a 911 call of an unresponsive male at Apache Bend Apartments on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011 shortly before 2 p.m.
According to Chief of Police Jim Kelley, officers found Carvin Coy Lemmons, 43, of Sweetwater deceased, upon arrival at the scene.
"Lemmons was found with one stab wound to the mid-section," Kelley said.

• Anthony David Martinez, 25 of Fort Worth — Warrant/surety withdrawal.

Local attorney representing Billie Dunn

The mother of missing Hailey Dunn, 13, has hired a lawyer and is no longer speaking with media.
Billie Dunn has hired attorney John S. Young to represent her in her three misdemeanor charges: hindering and apprehension, possession of dangerous drugs and false report to a police officer.
Young says he isn't convinced a search warrant for Adkins body was issued last Thursday.
"(Police) didn't even have an arrest warrant for the boyfriend, it was a matter of wanting to talk to him," said Young.

SEED members attend workshop

Economic and community development representatives from throughout the region met in Eastland on March 16, to sharpen their development skills.
A workshop entitled “Secrets of Economic Development Unveiled” offered presentations by several E.D. specialists. Topics included: economic development programs and assistance available through the Governor’s Office; what’s new in economic development; legislative update; prospecting for prospects and how to respond; and legalities that ED organization must follow.

Sweetwater Middle School TMSCA State Bound

Sweetwater Middle School had 13 students make it to State in Texas Math and Science Coaches Association (TMSCA). Students on the Number Sense Team are Annaliese Espinoza, sixth grade; Ashleigh Jimenez, seventh grade; Gabriel Lieja, sixth grade; and Cody Chapman, eighth grade.
Students on the Calculator Team are Annaliese Espinoza, sixth grade; Christa Martin, sixth grade; Cody Chapman, eighth grade; and Corynn Martin, eighth grade.
Students on the Math Team are Annaliese Espinoza, sixth grade; Marc Butler, seventh grade; Sarah Valdez, seventh grade; and Cody Chapman, eighth grade.

GP donates supplies to local schools

Each year, continued cuts in education budgets have forced teachers to spend hundreds of their own dollars just to keep their rooms stocked with essential classroom supplies, like tablets, tape, glue and markers.
This year, employees at Georgia-Pacific's Sweetwater gypsum plant are helping. They collected and donated boxes of school supplies to J.P. Cowen, Southeast Elementary, East Ridge Elementary and Highland ISD. In addition to the boxes of supplies given by employees, the company also donated cases of other needed products including its office paper, paper towels and tissue products.
