The proposed School Improvement Plan (SIP) was presented during the SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) Board of Trustees meeting on Monday night, Oct. 17, 2011 at the Administration Building.
Shown is one of several items that will be auctioned off at the Sweetwater REHAB Shrimp Peel on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex.Â The event will be from 6-8 p.m. Pictured is a 1900â€™s Doctorâ€™s buggy and complete harness donated by Howard Rogers of Sweetwater.Â
Also to be auctioned is a new six-seat Polaris Ranger from Maxâ€™s Kawasaki valued at $12,500. It will be auctioned to the highest bidder. Tickets to the event are $20 and available at the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce or by calling 864-3557 or 235-9775. All proceeds will benefit the West Texas Rehab Center.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 60 calls for service, issued two citations and made three arrests on Oct. 19, 2011.
The SPD received 30, 911 calls.

A family was saved by members of the Sweetwater Police Department in a kidnapping incident that began in Sweetwater on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011 and ended in Frederick, Okla. on Monday, Oct. 10, 2011.
The final event of the Big County BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) Robotics competition is slated for Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Sweetwater campus of TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas. Machine Check-In Day will be on Friday, Oct. 21, starting at noon in the TSTC Sweetwater Student Center. This will lead into the final event, Contest Day, on Saturday, Oct. 22, when the actual competition will take place.
Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie announced that in response to drought conditions, the Texas FSA State Committee authorized emergency grazing use of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres for 92 Texas counties effective Nov. 1, 2011, for the fiscal year (FY) 2012 winter/spring period. Emergency grazing for FY 2011 ends on Oct. 31, 2011.
Petticoats on the Prairie is again coming to West Texas. "Petticoats on the Prairie is a vintage article and antique showcase that West Texas people can come to for the weekend and not have to travel across the state,â€ť explained free-lance designer Cecilia Scott, who with several other women who call themselves the Rodeo Queens, are behind the event. Scott, a Colorado City native who came back to West Texas to live in the family home made from an old church, believes wide open rural spaces foster a greater percentage of creativity than cities.

â€˘ Dennis Dewayne Dison, 41, of Sweetwater â€” Gregg County warrant/violation of probation.
Aubrey Phillip Childers was re-indicted on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, by the Nolan County Grand Jury. Childers was charged with sexual assault, a second degree felony, enhanced to a first degree felony with one prior conviction. Court documents state that Childers sexually assaulted the victim, knowing that the victim did not consent and was unconscious or physically unable to resist or unaware that the sexual assault was occurring.
Local breast cancer survivors and local officials hung a wreath in the lobby of the Nolan County Courthouse on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Nolan County. The event was co-sponsored by the Women's Health Awareness Program at the Alliance for Women and Children, Vera West Women's Center in Abilene, West Central Texas Chapter Oncology Nursing, Your Women's Center at Abilene Regional Medical Center and the American Cancer Society.
