SWEETWATER, Texas â€“ Sweetwater Goodfellows, the cityâ€™s annual holiday season fund drive for Nolan County residents in need, has received a $1,000 donation from Tenaska, Goodfellows President Billie Johnston has announced.
â€śOn behalf of Sweetwater Goodfellows, I want to thank Tenaska for this generous contribution,â€ť she said. â€śThis donation will help provide a happier Christmas and holiday season for many of our neighbors in need this year.â€ť
Last Saturday the top student musicians across Texas gathered to participate in the final round of competition for the Texas All-State Band. In Lubbock, over 250 students were invited, representing over 100 competing schools, from Abilene to Amarillo to El Paso. Three students from Sweetwater High School competed. Sophomore French hornist Stephen Le finished in seventh place out of 20 auditioning, just missing all-state by three chairs. Sophomore alto saxophonists Chase Scott placed third out of 15, just missing all-state by one spot.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 43 calls for service, issued no citations and made one arrest on Jan. 11, 2012.
The SPD received 12, 911 calls.

The final pledge was received this past week from the First Responders Appreciation and Recognition Dinner held on Oct. 25, 2011, and the committee announced that the community raised $18,910.92 at the dinner. All six Nolan County fire departments will each receive a total of $3,151.50 to help restock and repair what they used in the many wildfires of 2011. "Our committee is most proud of the appreciation and recognition dinner for our first responders and their families and the way our community came together to make it such a successful event.
Brookshireâ€™s Food and Pharmacy stores have brought back the Food Club Frenzy to give customers a chance to win $500 and a new Chevrolet Camaro valued at approximately $40,000.

The SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) Board of Directors met for their first meeting of 2012 on Monday morning, Jan. 9 at the Chamber of Commerce.
The board approved a resolution supporting the extension of the Production Tax Credit (PTC) for wind development. Ken Becker, the Executive Director for SEED, noted that this year he will be attending the AWEA (American Wind Energy Association) Washington Day in February, which allows him and others associated with the group to interact with and encourage Congress to take action on the matter.
The first day of testimony in the Julian Castillo trial began on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012 at the Nolan County Courthouse, with the state presenting their whole case and the defense beginning their case by presenting an audio recording.
Castillo is charged with two counts â€” aggravated sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child â€” from an incident occurring around May 15, 2002. Opening statements were heard from both the state and defense, 32nd Judicial District Attorney Ann Reed and defense attorney Jacob Blizzard.
The Woman's Forum holiday shopping spree, which was held from November to December of 2011 has raised a total of $1,734 after awarding the winner, C.J. Hubbard $500. The Pioneer Museum will receive $867 and the Woman's Forum Civic Improvement and Beautification Fund will also receive $867. One of the Woman's Forum's two main projects is the Pioneer Museum. In the past five years, the Woman's Forum has had several fundraisers and has donated a total of $6,584.
