Six-Man teams coming to bowl

For the first time in several years, fans will have the chance to watch a six-man football game at Sweetwater's Mustang Bowl this weekend.
Motley County (Matador) and Sterling City have agreed to hold their Division II six-man state semifinal here at 7:30 p.m. Friday, according to Danny Escobar with the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce playoff committee.

Sarah Getto in concert tonight

Christmas is coming early for Sarah, but she isn’t celebrating alone.
For the second year in a row, the Rotary Club of Sweetwater is sponsoring Sarah Getto in concert in Sweetwater. Getto is a singer, songwriter and musician, from Norman, Oklahoma.

Calvin and Company hosts Chamber Coffee

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce held its monthly chamber coffee at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Calvin and Company Real Estate, LLC, located at 1408 E. Broadway.

Hanukkah’s inception has dark origins

Even though the dreidel and the Adam Sandler song have made Hanukkah into a festive holiday that is often poked fun at, the Jewish holiday's inception has a dark origin dating back thousands of years ago.
A war in 165 B.C. against the Jews and the Hellenist Syrians begins the story. The Greek king of Syria, Antiochus, had banned the Jews from partaking in their rituals, forcing them to worship the Greek gods. The Holy Temple had been taken and dedicated to the Greek god Zeus for his worship. Fueled by anger, the majority of the Jews made the decision to fight back.

Rep. King to tour District 71

Representative Susan L. King will be visiting several locations in District 71 on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, to meet with constituents and tour some areas of interest in the Big Country.

RPMH sees slow month

On Monday night, Nov. 29, the Nolan County District Board of Directors met for its regular session at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Various approvals were made during the meeting, including the minutes from the previous meeting. However, the board did make a decision to table an approval of the financing of building improvements until more research was conducted. It was reported that there was a discrepancy in the two schedules and investments that were not clarified before the meeting took place, prompting concerns about the interest rates.

No transports at wreck

No injuries were reported and no transports were made from a wreck that occurred Tuesday afternoon on the corner of E. Arizona and Campbell Street.

Roscoe DARE has culmination ceremony

The Roscoe DARE program role models and students participated in a culmination ceremony to celebrate a great year. Daren the Lion made an appearance at the ceremony and Justice of the Peace Sharon Gardner was the guest speaker at the event. Also shown is Angie Collier, Nolan County DARE officer.

NCF awards Back Pack Buddies with donation

Members of the Nolan County Foundation Board recently announced the awarding of $1,000 to Back Pack Buddies. In making the announcement and presenting agency representatives Leah and Alaina Andrews this assistance, Jerry Riggs, President of the NCF, stressed the importance of supporting worthwhile agencies as they serve vital needs for Nolan County residents. Riggs also stated that the NCF will be identifying other special needs and giving additional financial assistance in the near future.

Fatal crash in Nolan County

November 30, 2010

One person was killed and one injured in a one vehicle rollover crash occurring at around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 29, 2010. The crash was one mile North of County Road 145 on County Road 147 in Nolan County.
A 2007 Nissan Frontier pickup, driven by Louis Dakota-Chance Green, 19, of Sweetwater, was traveling North on County Road 147. As the vehicle approached a steep dip in the roadway, Green lost control of the vehicle. The passenger, Hilton Dean Goff, 18, of Iraan, was ejected during the rollover.
