Masons host dinner benefitting WTCAC

Sweetwater Masonic Lodge #571 hosted its third dinner benefitting the West Texas Children's Advocacy Center on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex.
Along with the dinner was the silent auction held before and during the dinner. The dinner consisted of barbecue sausage and chicken with all the trimmings, all cooked by Masons and served by WTCAC board members. Entertainment was provided at the dinner by cowboy poet Charlie Davis and Rodger Lister. Flags were presented by Sweetwater commanders.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 46 calls for service, issued three citations and made one arrest on March 28, 2011.

The SPD received 15, 911 calls.

Calls on Accidents:
• CR 119/Blue Bonnet.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 100 block of S. Hopkins.
• Theft — 500 block of NE Georgia.
Arrested by SPD:
• Bobby Lee Cantu, 37 — Driving while intoxicated.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had five calls for service, served seven civil papers and made no arrests from March 28, 2011.
Calls for service:
• Prisoner transport — Taylor County.

Drug house demolished

A few months ago, the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office and the 32nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office conducted a raid of a residence addressed as 1110 Runnels Street in Sweetwater. Numerous arrests were made as a result of an investigation that lasted several months. This address was very well known in Sweetwater and Nolan County for the large amount of drug trafficking (primarily crack cocaine) that took place at this house. As a result, the house was seized and subsequently forfeited in 32nd District Court. District Attorney Ann Reed handled the forfeiture proceedings and the house was award

Family Dollar in Sweetwater is currently going through some major changes inside the store and customers will get to see the finished product this weekend during the store's Customer Appreciation Weekend.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 110 calls for service, issued 18 citations and made five arrests from March 26-27, 2011.

The SPD received 67, 911 calls.

• Criminal mischief — 1500 block of Ragland.
• Information only — 600 block of E. New Mexico.
• Criminal mischief — 1300 block of Bristol.
• Burglary of a habitation — 500 block of Bowie.

Arrested by SPD:
• Nikkya Pinkerton, 27 — Criminal trespass/criminal mischief.
• Frenchesca Rico, 17 — Warrant.
• Pedro Villanueva, 41 — Driving while license invalid.

Plaza gets rocked

The Nolan County Plaza was rocked out on Saturday evening with a live performance by local band Static Pulse to end the week's Sweetwater Music Festival. Many music venues were held throughout the week, bringing different types of music for all to enjoy in Sweetwater.

Highland OAP advances to district competition

Highland High School's one-act play advanced from Zone Competition in Roby on Tuesday, March 22. Scenes from "The Fastest Woman Alive," by Karen Sunde, published by Dramatic Publishing, is the story of Jackie Cochran and the WASP — Women's Aircorp Service Pilots — who were stationed at Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas during WWII. The play tells of the heroism, triumphs and hardships of these very special, determined and dedicated women. The story brings to life a significant period in the history of the world, Nolan County and Sweetwater.

Local pastor to travel to Mexico

Dale Stowe, pastor of the Word of God church in Sweetwater, is about to embark on a mission trip to Reynosa, Mexico.
Pastor Stowe shares about his trip for many reasons. He wants to bring attention to answering God's call and so that he also might be lifted up in prayer for the duration of the trip.
The journey began through Larry Goff, a forty-year missionary who has traveled the world and specializes in ministering in South America. In this particular mission effort, Goff has been near the Texas, Mexico and Arizona borders to reach people who are in need of help.

Sweetwater Music Festival continues

The Sweetwater Music Festival continued on Thursday evening with Laney Wallace, 2011 Miss Snake Charmer singing the National Anthem at the semi-annual meeting of the West Texas-New Mexico leadership alliance networking event at the National WASP World War II Museum and the Sweetwater Municipal Band providing the entertainment (shown).

Sweetwater played host for the sixth year to international trade officials and regional leaders from West Texas and New Mexico on Thursday evening at the semi-annual meeting of the West Texas-New Mexico leadership alliance networking event at the National WASP World War II Museum. Leaders discussed everything from education and energy to agriculture and community strategies. More than 150 people attended the event from Texas, New Mexico, Canada and the United Kingdom.
