The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 40 calls for service, issued two citations and made four arrests on April 19, 2011.

The SPD received 13, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 200 block of E. Arizona.
• Burglary of building — 500 block of Lamar.
Arrested by SPD:
• Aaron Treviño, 21 — Warrants.
• Justin Tollison, 19 — Warrants.
• Arturo Treviño, 52 — Public intoxication.
• Stephen Getty, 55 — Public intoxication.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had six calls for service, served five civil papers and made no arrests on April 19, 2011.

Indictments given for drug ring, stabbing

The Nolan County Grand Jury handed down 10 indictments on Tuesday , April 19, 2011, with eight of those indictments sealed. One of those indictments stemmed from a crack cocaine distribution house being busted in Sweetwater on Oct. 6, 2010.
Indicted for engaging in organized criminal activity was Robert Larry Williams. The offense is classified as a first degree felony, enhanced with two prior convictions, which could get him 25 years to life in prison. His bond was set at $25,000.
Williams' prior convictions included forgery in 1985 and aggravated assault in 1991.

Winners announced at Spring Fling

The first annual Spring Fling Coloring Contest and Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest was held in downtown Roscoe at the Roscoe Emporium on April 16. Local students turned in coloring sheets prior to the contest and created sidewalk chalk art for the day's art contest. Winners of the contest are shown above including Temy Teel, John Robert O'Callaghan, Rhonda Stratton, Joseph Collins, Gabriel Alcala, Celinda Alcala, Kristina Rando, K'Den Stone, Larkyn O'Callaghan, Adison Torres and Alison Torres. Not shown are other winners, Hoyt Mulanax, Luke Wilson and Jake Wilson.

Confederate history on display at library

Mike Briggs will have a special history display at the County-City Library during the month of April which is Confederate History Month. He will be displaying the history of Texas as a Confederate state. The display will be set up on the bulletin board in the front of the library. The hours for the library are Monday from 1-6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

• Credit/debit card abuse — 100 block of NW Georgia.
• Criminal mischief — 500 block of E. Broadway.
• Assault — 600 block of E. New Mexico.
• Aggravated sexual assault — Sweetwater area.
• Unattended death — 300 block of Hightower.

Arrested by SPD:
• Bennie Walker, 47 — Warrants.

Clark burned saving fellow firefighter

DALLAS (AP) — A Gorman volunteer firefighter hospitalized in a Dallas burn unit says he ran for his life after being caught in a raging wildfire.
Matt Clark, a native of Sweetwater and son of Sweetwater Police Sergeant Robert and Linda Clark, responded to a brush fire near his home in Gorman last week.
Clark, in a bedside interview Monday with WFAA-TV, said his crew was surrounded by flames. Clark says he and others "were at a dead sprint, trying to outrun the fire" and it was very scary.

Small acreage landowner workshop begins today

SWEETWATER – The Texas AgriLife Extension Service office in Nolan County will conduct a four-part series of small-acreage landowner workshops.
The first will be from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19 in the Extension Meeting Room on the third floor of the Nolan County Courthouse in Sweetwater.

Law enforcement center discussed

A special meeting was held by the Nolan County Commissioners' Court on Monday morning, April 18, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
The meeting was a workshop on the potential construction of a new law enforcement center and jail for Nolan County. Local city officials and law enforcement were in attendance to determine the current standing on the matter and what steps to take in order to move forward.

The SPD received 27, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Accident involving injury — 300 block of SW Georgia.
• Criminal mischief — 1400 block of Town Creek.
• Evading/resisting arrest —300 block of E. Alabama.
• Family violence/assault enhanced — Sweetwater.
• Information only — 300 block of Haskell.

Arrested by SPD:
• Jonathan Givens, 22 — Driving while intoxicated.

Local resident catches ShareLunker Program fish

Faron McCain of Sweetwater, Texas caught a 14.94 pound largemouth bass on April 14, 2011 at Lake O.H. Ivie. The Texas Parks and Wildlife ShareLunker Program was dispatched to the Concho Park Marina to document and transport the bass to their hatchery in Athens, Tx.
McCain’s fish was the third largest ShareLunker Program fish of the year, which runs from October 1 through April 30. Sean Swank of De Berry, Tx has the largest bass, weighing in at 16.07 pounds, caught in Caddo Lake.
