Cox named HOBBS Teacher of the Year

John Cox has been awarded the dual honor of Teacher of the Year in 2010-2011 for the HOBBS Alternative School and the Secondary Teacher of the Year for SISD.
Cox is a 9th-12th Math and Computer teacher at HOBBS Alternative School for a variety of subjects such as Algebra One, Geometry, Algebra Two, Pre-calculus and BCIS/BIM. He has taught for the past 18 years, with the past two years of that time in Sweetwater ISD.

Sweetwater ISD to host Chamber Coffee

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly Chamber Coffee at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 3, at the Sweetwater Independent School District Mustang Bowl, located at 1205 Ragland. Sweetwater ISD's Superintendent is Terry Pittman. Mustang Bowl was founded in 1939 and is the home of the Sweetwater Mustangs and hosted 10 playoff games last season. SISD employs 380 faculty and staff members. "Mustang football has begun! Join in the excitement by attending the monthly Chamber Coffee at the Mustang Bowl concession stand," said hosts.

Kiwanis Club hosts pool party and school supply raffle

The Sweetwater Kiwanis Club hosted a pre-teen free swim day at the Sweetwater Municipal Pool on Thursday, July 28, 2011. They served sno cones and drew for school supply packages.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 170 calls for service, issued 11 citations and made nine arrests from July 29-31, 2011.

The SPD received 69, 911 calls.

Crash claims life

August 1, 2011

One person was killed in a one vehicle rollover crash occurring Sunday, July 31, 2011, at 11:57 a.m. The crash was located on U.S. 84, seven miles north of Roscoe in Nolan County.
Cynthia Walsh Holman, 52 years of age from Pearland, Texas was pronounced dead at the scene by Judge Sharon Gardner at 12:36 p.m. The body was taken to McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
The only vehicle involved in the crash was a 2008 Chevrolet HHR driven by Cynthia Walsh Holman.

Holmes named East Ridge Teacher of the Year

Tracy Holmes is a Kindergarten teacher at East Ridge Elementary and was named 2010-2011 Teacher of the Year at her respective school. All three of her years of teaching have been with Sweetwater ISD.
Holmes earned an Interdisciplinary Generalist (EC-4TH) degree at Hardin-Simmons University. She involves herself with community activities through First Baptist Church in Roby.
Her philosophy on an outstanding teacher might not be lengthy, yet Holmes' strong message has a great impact on students which spans the classroom and beyond.

The dog days of summer

We call them the dog days of summer, but how do dogs deal with the summer days (and other pets, too)? As the season drags on and the heat rises, pet owners can ensure the best care for their animals by taking a series of steps.
"The extreme summer temperatures we're seeing pose special risk for pets that owners should be aware of. Of course everyone is aware of the need for adequate water and shade and of the dangers of leaving pets in the car," said Dr. Jerod Peek, a local veterinarian from the East Ridge Veterinary Hospital.

The importance of vaccines

It’s true that newborn babies are immune to many diseases because they have antibodies they got from their mothers. However, the duration of this immunity may last only a month to about a year. Further, young children do not have maternal immunity against some vaccine-preventable diseases, such as whooping cough.

USDA reminds producers of Sept. 1 sales closing date for noninsurable crops

Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, urges producers who want to purchase coverage through the Noninsurable Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) to do so before the sales closing date of Sept. 1, 2011.
NAP provides financial assistance to producers of noninsurable crops when low yields, loss of inventory or prevented planting occur due to normal disasters.

Sweetwater High rated Academically Unacceptable

The Texas Education Agency released school accountability ratings for 2011.
Highland School received the highest rating in Nolan County, receiving an Exemplary rating. Blackwell School received an Academically Acceptable rating and Roscoe Collegiate High School received a Recognized rating. Roscoe Elementary was Academically Acceptable and Hobbs Alternative Education Co-op received an AEA (Alternative Education Accountability) Academically Acceptable rating.
