Two pets available for adoption at animal shelter

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has two dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a male shepherd mix and a female shih tzu.
According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

Lake Trammell bait shop to be torn down

City Commissioners met Tuesday morning for their regular session. The minutes from the June 10 meeting were approved. Commissioners then approved the investment report for the quarter ending June 30.
It was agreed to use the Tommy Morris Agency to represent the City of Sweetwater for health insurance plans for its employees. The agency has been helping the city for the past several years. "We appreciate the appointment and will do the best we can representing the City of Sweetwater and its employees," said Tommy Morris.

Sweetwater Cornerstone Fellowship to host VBS

Sweetwater Cornerstone Fellowship, located at 807 W. Alabama, will be hosting Blast Off Vacation Bible School from 6-8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 11, and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 12. The Sunday celebration will begin at 11 a.m. There will be games, Bible adventures and crafts. A total of 50 children will be accepted (Kindergarten through fifth grade completed) so pre-register by calling 235-1369.

New principal welcomed to Sweetwater High School

Dr. Ron Morris has joined Sweetwater Independent School District as the high school principal. He and his wife Tammy, along with their daughter Mary, are in the process of moving to Sweetwater from the Dallas area. Dr. Morris has worked in many positions in different school systems, from teaching kindergarten and sixth grade, starting after school programs and working as assistant principal and then principal. "May main goal is to increase academic achievement," said Dr. Morris.

Several pleas entered in 32nd Judicial District Court

Several people have recently entered pleas during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings.
Isaiah Zachary Gongora pleaded guilty to indecency with a child by exposure, a third degree felony. He was sentenced to 10 years of community supervision. He was also ordered to pay a $3,000 fine, $782 in court costs and $500 in attorney's fees. He will also have to serve 240 hours of community service.

DMI to host Social Security presentation

DMI Wealth Management Solutions will have a Social Security presentation from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, at the Hampton Inn, located at 302 SE Georgia in Sweetwater. The basics of Social Security, maximizing Social Security, advanced claiming strategies and steps one should take if nearing retirement will be covered at the presentation.

Blood drive planned for tomorrow

A community blood drive will take place in Sweetwater on Wednesday, July 9. The Meek Blood Center bloodmobile will be parked in the First Financial Bank parking lot from noon until 6 p.m.
“We are asking donors to please remember that the need for blood is constant. Even the regular of blood donors get busy in the summer with vacations and other activities and forget to donate blood. Blood donation only takes about an hour, and that hour could give someone else a lifetime,” said Frances Baker, donor recruiter for Meek Blood Center.

Sweetwater Aglow International Lighthouse to meet tonight
