SMS hoop results

November 24, 2010

The Sweetwater Middle School boys and girls basketball teams began their 2010-11 seasons by playing Brownwood this past Thursday.
The SMS boys earned a split of their four games with the eighth graders winning but the seventh grade teams losing.

Lady Cats down Lady Stangs, 41-27

SAN ANGELO — Another night, another 5A school for the Class 3A Sweetwater girls basketball team — and one more still to go.
On Monday, the Lady Mustangs traveled to San Angelo Central just three nights after hosting Abilene High and lost, 41-27, drop-ping their record to 1-4. The team is at Abilene Cooper at 6:30 p.m. today before finally getting a break for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Sweetwater trailed Cen-tral 10-4 after the first quar-ter, but was still within stri-king distance at halftime as the Lady Cats led 23-14.

Spikers earn all-district honors

A total of seven Sweetwater High School volleyball players have received all-District 5-3A recognition.
Sophomore middle blocker Kathleen Campbell was named to the first team and sophomore setter Suede Shirley earned second-team honors, while sophomore outside hitter Kendra Crosson was named as District 5-3A’s newcomer of the year.
Four Lady Mustangs — seniors Brittany Lashinski and Kelsey Painter and juniors Alicia Finn and Kensi Jones — received all-district honorable mention.

‘Stangs surge past Merkel in second half to stay unbeaten

Getting to the free throw line helped Sweetwater remain unbeaten in early-season boys basketball play here Monday.
Though outscored from the field, the Mustangs used a decisive edge at the charity stripe to record their third straight victory, 60-55, over Merkel.
Sweetwater shot 39 free throws and made 20 of them, including 11-of-20 in the fourth quarter.
Merkel — playing its season opener after ending its football season last week — shot a better per-centage than Sweetwater but attempted just 17 free throws, making 12.

Mustangs are off to 2-0 start

COLEMAN — Sweetwa-ter jumped out to a 21-7 lead after one quarter, and held double-digit ad-vantages the rest of the way en route to a 56-41 road win at Coleman on Friday night.
Sweetwater (2-0) built its lead to 24 points on three occasions in the second half until Coleman cut into the lead slightly with a late rally.
Taylor Jones had 18 points, Paxton Kelley 16 and B.J. Walker 11 for the Mustangs, who will host Merkel at 7:30 p.m. Monday before taking a short break for the Thanksgiving holiday.

SW girls fall to Abil. High

A bad start was too much for the Sweetwater girls basketball team to overcome here Friday as they lost to Class 5A Abilene High, 55-36, at Mustang Gym.
Sweetwater fell behind 18-4 after the opening quar-ter before tightening up on defense in the second period, when they held Abilene to just six points. But the Lady Mustangs still trailed 24-14 at halftime, and were unable to get any closer over the final two quarters.
Taylor McKoy scored 18 points for Sweetwater, but she was the only Lady Mustang to reach double figures in the contest as the team fell to 1-3.

Highland teams get split; Plowgirls lose

The Highland girls picked up their first win of the 2010-11 season on Friday, but the Highland boys and Roscoe girls both lost.
Highland’s girls (1-3) rallied in the second half for a 45-41 win over Sands. However, Highland’s boys lost 63-2 and Roscoe’s girls fell to Cross Plains 29-28.
After losing their last two games by a combined two points, Highland’s girls had to overcome a 23-18 halftime deficit to beat Sands.
The Lady Hornets pulled ahead by a point, 29-28, at the end of three periods and then outscored Sands 16-13 in the fourth quarter.

Adames scores in OT

November 18, 2010

Dylon Adames scores for Sweetwater on Tuesday during overtime against Hawley while teammate Kevin Sepeda watches. Adames scored five of his seven points in the extra period to help the Mustangs pull out a 71-62 victory in their 2010-11 season opener. Sweetwater’s boys travel to Coleman for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff Friday while the girls will play host to Abilene High, also starting at 6:30 p.m.

Roscoe girls defeat Blackwell for 1st win

ROSCOE — The Roscoe girls got their first win of the season by beating Blackwell, 50-23, on Tuesday.
Kimberly Norris scored 20 points to pace Roscoe (1-1). Sara Kingston and Lynnsi Moses had six, Katie McIntire five, Faith Boren four, Jacinda Morales, Carolina Perez, Kaitlinn Reed and Whitney Williams two and Jacey Tomlin one.
Blackwell (0-3) was led by Jennifer Allen and Amanda Bullard with six while Kaitlyn Gaston had four, Brooklyn Harris three and Jessica Morrow and Reccie Roland two. Also, Bullard pulled down 12 rebounds and Roland seven.
