Though it was a short trip, Tuesday proved to be a long night for both Sweetwater High School varsity basketball teams at Merkel.
The SHS girls lost 54-29 to the Lady Badgers, who are currently ranked No. 7 among all Class 2A teams by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. Then the SHS boys — who just two weeks earlier had defeated Merkel 60-55 at Mustang Gym — fell victim to a horrible start and lost, 64-48. Both teams will get another shot at Merkel on Thursday, however, when they play first-round games at the Stanton tournament that runs through Saturday (see schedules below).
All four Sweetwater High School sub-varsity teams won their games at Merkel on Tuesday.
Sweetwater’s JV girls are now 10-0 this season after a 40-32 victory.
The teams were locked in a 20-20 tie at halftime, but Sweetwater limited Merkel to 12 points in the second half. Janell Walker scored 14 points to pace Sweetwater while Shelby Cason and Elise Lawrence scored eight points, Kelsi Crosson seven and Ashley Kincheloe three.
Sweetwater’s freshman girls are also having an excellent season.

Sweetwater High School held its annual football banquet Monday at Texas State Technical College to honor the 2010 Mustang football players, as well as the SHS cheerleaders and student trainers. SHS coach Craig Slaughter is pictured introducing his varsity players. A highlight video of the season was also shown during the banquet.
After a busy weekend of tournament play, all of the Nolan County area high school basketball teams are back in action for single games today.
The Sweetwater girls and boys will both go to Merkel with the Lady Mustangs tipping off at 6:30 p.m. and the Mustangs at 8. The freshman and JV teams will also take on Merkel today.
The Mustangs took fourth place at Coahoma’s tourna-ment over the weekend, while the Lady Mustangs reached the consolation finals at Ballinger’s three-day tournament.
