Friday’s freshman girls game between Sweetwater and Wylie required an extra period, and wasn’t settled until the hosts rallied in the final minute to pull out a 34-33 win at Wylie’s gym.
It was just the fourth loss this season for Sweetwater (1-1 district), which trailed 25-21 after three periods but outscored Wylie 6-2 to force overtime. Kayla Chowning had 10 points for Sweetwater while Shaneese Brown and Taylor McPherson each had seven, Karlee Murff three and Larissa Locklar, Mac-aela Reschman and Sydney Vanderbilt two.
ABILENE — On Friday, the Sweetwater girls basketball team jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Wylie in the first 2:47 of the contest and the host team failed to connect on a field goal until almost halfway through the opening period. But after that slow start, Wylie soon found its shooting touch in a big way and won, 63-32, to maintain a perfect 3-0 record in district play while Sweetwater (0-2, 15-12) is still looking for its first win.

Kaleb Hoover’s 20 points paced Sweetwater, which has lost just once in 15 games this season.

2-point loss to San Angelo Lake View at home just 72 hours earlier and 13 defeats in 15 games since the start of December, the Sweetwater boys basketball team came in as a huge underdog at Wylie for its District 5-3A opener on Friday night.
But while the final result was a 79-55 loss, the short-handed Mustangs (6-15) not only showed plenty of fight but got excellent games from their top two scorers, 6-8 post Paxton Kelley and 5-9 guard Taylor Jones.
