For the first time this year, football and volleyball are both on tap today at Sweetwater High School starting at 5 p.m., when the first of two seventh grade football games against Wylie is played at Mustang Bowl while at the same time the freshman and JV volleyball teams host Snyder at Mustang Gym. The varsity match is at 6:30 p.m. and features a big District 5-3A rivalry matchup, as Sweetwater and Snyder are both trying for their first win in district play.
Highland was on the verge of handing Gordon its first loss of the year this past Friday. But the Longhorns, who trailed 32-16 at halftime and 56-40 after three periods, ran off the last 22 points to deny the Hornets’ upset bid and pull out a 62-56 win at Highland.
Highland (2-4) enjoyed 16-point leads on four separate occasions, the last time after a 67-yard kickoff return by Ron Covington for a TD and Steven Tester’s PAT to make it 56-40 in the third period, only to see Gordon pull out the win on a 1-yard run with just 1:37 left and improve to 6-0.
Sweetwater’s varsity tennis team played a quad match in San Angelo this past Saturday that also involved Andrews, San Angelo Central and Fredericksburg. In girls singles, Heidi Taylor defeated Fredericksburg’s No. 1 player 7-6, 7-4 (7-5). Also beating Fredericksburg in girls singles were Addisyn Cleckler (8-2) and Kristen Casto, who battled it out and won 6-3, 4-6 (10-6) against the No. 5 player. Casto also prevailed by an 8-6 score in her singles match against San Angelo Central.
The Sweetwater seventh grade Red volleyball team won first place at a Lubbock Cooper tournament held on Saturday. The team picked up wins over Lubbock Cooper, Shallowater, Lubbock Christian and Levelland. Pictured on the back row from left are Brittany Peeples, Bergen Trevino, Lauren Jones, Kaitlyn Foster, Maddie Berry and Kensi Chowning. On the front row are Christa Martin, Annaliese Espinosa, Davina Walker, Rhylee Meneses and Natalie Valdez. The team is coached by Jill Locklar.
