A near-disastrous second quarter failed to sink the Sweetwater boys basketball team here Monday, which used a big third-quarter rally to overcome a 10-point halftime deficit. But the Mustangs saved the best for the very end in defeating Colorado City, 49-47, on Taylor Jones’ buzzer-beating shot at Mustang Gym.
After losing at Abilene High this past Friday, the Sweetwater girls were back home Monday to continue their three-game gauntlet against Class 5A competition. But the re-sult was no better, as the Lady Mustangs lost to San Angelo Central, 61-48.
Alicia Finn’s 13 points led Sweetwater (3-2), which will host Abilene Cooper today. Suede Shir-ley had nine, Shelby Cason and Candice Hernandez six, Kendra Crosson five, Kinsey Browning four, Hayley Brownlow three and Kathleen Campbell two for the Lady Stangs.
Sweetwater will be hosting a high school football playoff doubleheader at Mustang Bowl this Friday.
Abernathy (10-1) and Holliday (9-2) will start the twinbill with a Class 2A, Division II regional matchup that is set to kick off at 3 p.m. The winner advances to the quarter-finals to face either Cisco or Idalou, who play Friday night at Colorado City.
