One night after getting a dramatic win over Colorado City on a buzzer-beater by Taylor Jones, the 5-9 senior poured in a season-high 21 points while Sweetwater got off to a good start here Tuesday against Andrews.
However, Jones didn’t get a lot of scoring help as no other Mustang player was able to reach double figures, and the visiting Mustangs came away with a 59-41 win. The game was basically decided in the third quarter, when Andrews outscored Sweetwater 19-8 after leading just 27-22 at halftime.
A three-game gauntlet against Class 5A foes is finally over for the Sweetwater girls basketball team.
Tuesday’s 46-27 loss to Abilene Cooper was the Lady Mustangs’ third in a row after a 3-0 start. The Lady Coogs held Sweetwa-ter to just eight field goals and its lowest point total of the young season.
Highland split a basket-ball doubleheader against Spur on Tuesday. The girls (4-1) won, 53-29, for their fourth straight victory but the boys (1-2) fell to Spur by a score of 37-27.
For the girls, Sierra Allen scored 20 points while Kara Hughey (16) and Beth Rich-burg (11) were also able to reach double figures. Jessica McCain had four and Lora Stewart two for Highland, which led 16-5, 30-10 and 35-16 at the quarter breaks.
