Lady ‘Stangs hold off Lady Hornets, 40-30

Thanks largely to a pair of big scoring runs — one in each half — Sweetwater gave Candice Wyatt a successful debut as head girls basketball coach here on Tuesday, as the Lady Mustangs held on to beat Highland 40-30.
With the game tied 11-11 early in the second quarter, Sweetwater ran off 15 straight points en route to a commanding 26-12 halftime advantage.

SW, Highland girls to tip off season against each other today

The 2011-12 high school girls basketball season tips off today with two Nolan County teams set to face off against each other.
Class 3A Sweetwater will entertain Class 1A Highland at 6:30 p.m. at Mustang Gym, right after a JV contest between the two schools at 5 p.m.
Today’s game marks the debut of new Sweetwater girls coach Candice Wyatt, who was hired in May fol-lowing the resignation of ex-coach Jerry McSherry. Six players return from a team which finished just below .500 (16-17) overall but was only 1-7 in district.

Morales qualifies for state

ARLINGTON — Ros-coe’s Jacinda Morales placed sixth among individual regional runners Saturday to qualify for the Class 1A girls state cross country meet.
Morales’ regional time was 12:37.24. The state meet will be held this Saturday at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

Highland finishes with win

After an oh-so-close loss last week, Highland ended its 2011 football season on Friday with a 48-33 victory over Hermleigh.
The Hornets rallied from a 14-6 deficit with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter for a 20-14 halftime lead, and never trailed again as they finished 3-7 overall and 1-2 in District 6, Divi-sion I six-man play.

Roscoe, Blackwell end seasons on losing note

The 2011 football season ended for Blackwell and Roscoe on Friday, and both finished rebuilding years on a losing note.
Roscoe had its best de-fensive effort of the year, but lost 12-2 at Rotan to finish a winless campaign at 0-10 (0-5 in District 7-1A, Division II). Roscoe led 2-0 after a first-period safety when Eric Padilla recorded a tackle in the end zone, but Rotan scored the next 12 points and held on for the win.

Snyder, Wylie are 1-2 in 5-3A

Snyder easily defeated Big Spring 49-7 Friday for the outright District 5-3A title, while Wylie took the No. 2 spot with a 36-16 win over Brownwood and will be the district’s Division I (big school) representative. Snyder and Brownwood will be in the Division II playoffs.
In District 7-1A, Divi-sion II, Crosbyton won the outright title by beating Ralls 49-21. Hamlin and Ralls claimed the other two berths. Hamlin was a 67-26 winner over Roby in its season finale.
