CORPUS CHRISTI — Sweetwater High School senior Bri Munoz placed eighth at the Class 3A state powerlifting meet Friday.
Munoz, competing in the 105-pound weight class, lifted a total of 570 pounds and had personal bests in all three categories in her first trip to the state meet. She had a 210-pound squat, 110-pound bench press and 250-pound dead lift.
Sweetwater’s other state competitor was also a sen-ior, Kelsey Painter, who was in the 132-pound weight class. Painter did not place, however, after she was disqualified in the squat. This was also the first state ap-pearance for Painter.
Sweetwater High School sent several boys powerlifters to Sundown earlier this month to compete in the Region I, Division II meet and four of them medaled. They are, front row from left, Jay Lomas, fifth place in the 123-pound weight class; Ryan Linebaugh, second place in the 165-pound weight class; Sam Nemir, first place (regional champion) in the 165-pound weight class; and Mateo Gonzales, fifth place in the 242-pound weight class. By finishing in the top two in their class, Nemir and Linebaugh advance to compete in the state meet this Saturday in Abilene.

In its final game before today’s District 5-3A opener at Big Spring, Sweetwater’s softball team showed some resiliency here on Thursday by coming all the way back from a five-run deficit to tie Levelland, 5-5, at the Jerry Collins Complex.
But the Loboettes then put together the winning rally with three runs in their half of the sixth inning to break the deadlock and held on for an 8-5 victory over the Lady Mustangs.
