On Friday, Sweetwater’s Jayci Shelton has two chan-ces to end her high school career with a gold medal at the 3A state track meet. That’s twice as many as a year ago when Shelton made her first trip to Austin and had a fifth-place finish in her only event, the girls 300-meter hurdles.
A higher finish this year seems likely, because Shelton has yet to lose a race in the 300 hurdles, and her only runnerup finish was in the 100 hurdles two weeks ago at a regional qualifiers meet held in Lubbock where Shelton was just .03 seconds behind the winner.
Ryan Mercer of Sweetwa-ter will be competing in the Class 3A boys state golf tournament as a medalist starting at 9:55 a.m. Thursday at the Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin. The 36-hole tourna-ment wraps up Friday.
Mercer is making his first trip to state after finish-ing as the No. 2 medalist earlier this month at the Region I-3A tournament in Lubbock. He had the lowest score of any regional medalist who was not on one of the top two teams.
