AUSTIN â Ryan Mercer of Sweetwater shot a 2-over 73 on Thursday to enter todayâs final round in a tie for fourth place in the boys individual stand-ings at the Class 3A state boys golf tournament.
Mercer, a junior who is making his first state appearance, trails first-round leader Sean Romero of Texarkana Pleasant Grove by just two strokes. He was scheduled to tee off for his final round at 8:10 a.m. today.
Mercer began his first round on the 17th hole as part of a shotgun start after a six-hour rain delay.
When Caden Smith of Roscoe competes in the Class 1A boys discus Friday, he will be one of the most experienced athletes in the state track and field meet.
Smith, a senior who also competes in the shot put on Saturday, also qualified in the discus and shot put when he was a sophomore and junior. He actually went to state twice his sophomore year, when Roscoe won its first Class 1A basketball title with the 6-3, 250-pound Smith playing a major role in leading the Plowboys to the championship.
On Friday, Sweetwaterâs Jayci Shelton has two chan-ces to end her high school career with a gold medal at the 3A state track meet. Thatâs twice as many as a year ago when Shelton made her first trip to Austin and had a fifth-place finish in her only event, the girls 300-meter hurdles.
A higher finish this year seems likely, because Shelton has yet to lose a race in the 300 hurdles, and her only runnerup finish was in the 100 hurdles two weeks ago at a regional qualifiers meet held in Lubbock where Shelton was just .03 seconds behind the winner.
