Ryan Mercer of Sweetwa-ter will be competing in the Class 3A boys state golf tournament as a medalist starting at 9:55 a.m. Thursday at the Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin. The 36-hole tourna-ment wraps up Friday.
Mercer is making his first trip to state after finish-ing as the No. 2 medalist earlier this month at the Region I-3A tournament in Lubbock. He had the lowest score of any regional medalist who was not on one of the top two teams.

The state meet in Austin represents the pinnacle for high school track and field athletes. And for Callie Sandusky of Highland, it will be a chance to end her two-sport career by bringing home a state medal.
Sandusky, a senior, will be making her first state appearance when she com-petes in the Class 1A girls high jump at 6 p.m. Friday. She qualified with a second-place jump of 5-4 at regionals, a personal best effort that tied Highland’s school record set in 1984 by Brandye (Owens) Wilson, now a teacher at Highland.

Sweetwater’s Jason Vause (left), a freshman on the Hardin-Simmons University baseball team, somehow managed to avoid the tag on this play last Saturday at Abilene’s Hunter Field and score the go-ahead run for the Cowboys in an 8-6 win that evened their best-of-three playoff series with Mississippi College. HSU then came back to win Game 3, 12-11 in 14 innings, and reach the championship round of the American Southwest Conference tournament that begins today at Texas-Dallas in Richardson. HSU is one of four teams in the tournament.

LUBBOCK — After making her first trip to state as a junior, Jayci Shelton is going back — this time in both hurdles — to Austin her senior year after a clean sweep at regionals on Tuesday.
The state meet, scheduled for May 13-14 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus, gives Shelton another shot at matching her older sister Morgan’s 2009 accomplishment of winning a first-place gold medal in the hurdles. Jayci was fifth at state last year in the 300 hurdles, and gets to compete not only in that event again later this month but in the 100 hurdles as well.
Students completing grades 1-7 are invited to attend a Lady Mustang Basketball Camp set for June 6-9 at the Sweet-water Middle School gym, which is located on 305 Lamar Street.
Times for the camp are from 9-11:30 a.m. on all four days. The cost will be $35 and pre-registration is greatly appreciated. A concession stand will be available.
The goal of the camp is to improve players’ skills in basket-ball through instruction in individual skills and fun team competitions.
