Mike Welch, a Sweetwater native who during his high school days helped lead the Mustangs to their only state football title in school history in 1985 and later starred at Baylor University, was inducted recently into the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame along with nine others during a banquet ceremony that was held at the Abilene Civic Center.

Blackwell High School athletes were honored at an end-of-year banquet recently and several got top awards.
Caleb Jeter and Jennifer Allen were chosen respectively as the schoolâ€™s outstanding overall boys and girls athletes.
Caleb Magness was top boys athlete in basketball and golf and shared tennis honors with Brandon Elliott, and Mason Magness was top athlete in track. Hadley Holland received the football honor, while Brandon Elliott received the Fighting Hornet award. Caleb Magness won the Monte Pillion Award and Jayden Jones was named as Newcomer of the Year.
Connor Stafford of Sweet-water and Caden Smith of Roscoe will participate in the 12th annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes Myrle Greathouse All-Star Classic football game this Saturday, June 4 at 7 p.m. at Abileneâ€™s Shotwell Stadium.
Several Sweetwater High School golfers were recently honored for their outstanding play during the 2011 spring season. Pictured are Leila Rubio, Elise Lawrence, Sarah Witt, Jodie May, Jonah Lawrence, Alex Castillo, Dylan Torres, Ryan Mercer and Mason Andrews. May (varsity girls), Rubio (JV girls), Jonah Lawrence (JV boys) and Mercer (varsity boys) were named Vardon Trophy winners for having the seasonâ€™s lowest stroke averages.
Candice Wyatt has been hired as Sweetwaterâ€™s new girls coordinator and head girls basketball coach, according to athletic director Craig Slaughter.
Wyatt will be replacing Jerry McSherry, who held both positions the past two years before resigning to become head girls basketball coach at Brady.
Wyatt, who is a native of Cross Plains, has previous coaching experience at May, Sunray and Dimmitt, where she was serving as assistant girls basketball and track coach. She also held those positions while at Sunray.
Roscoe Collegiate recog-nized its 2010-11 athletes at the schoolâ€™s sports banquet on Friday. Athletes in football, cross country, basketball, track and powerlifting were recognized, including those receiving all-district, all-area or all-state honors in their sport this past year. The athletes who received special awards at this yearâ€™s banquet, held at the school cafetorium, are pictured.
Serving as guest speaker for the sports banquet was Jason Johns, who is defensive coordinator for the Abilene Christian University football program.
Two basketball camps, one each for local boys and girls, will be held in Sweetwater on June 6-9.
A Mustang Basket-ball Camp will be held at the high school gym and has two sessions. The registration deadline is Tuesday, May 31. Students completing grades 3-5 will attend from 9-11 a.m. each day, while grades 6-8 will attend from 1-3 p.m. The fee is $30. Each camper must sign a release form and show proof of insurance. Participants will re-ceive a camp T-shirt and basketball. Water will be provided, but campers may bring a sports drink.

Roscoe athletic banquet Friday
AUSTIN â€” Roscoeâ€™s Caden Smith won his second silver medal in as many days Saturday at the UIL track and field championships with a throw of 54-5 1/2 in the Class 1A boys shot put.
Smith, a senior, also captured a second-place silver medal Friday in the boys discus with a throw of 167-7. He finishes his high school career with four state medals, including the third-place bronze medals he won in the discus and shot put in 2009.
