Highland has a new head football coach, Jeff Shelton, this year, and he inherits some good talent from former coach Karry Owens, who left Highland after 18 seasons and a 147-56-3 record to become the head coach at Water Valley.
Highland managed just a 2-7 record for Owens in his final year, but was practically starting over with a slew of youngsters after graduating most of the top talent from the 2009 squad that reached the state finals.
Highland holds its annual “Big Blue Preview†Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. at the football field. All football players and spirit groups will be introduced.
A year ago, the Sweetwater volleyball team opened its season with a straight-set loss against Seminole at home. But on Tuesday, Sweetwater hosted Seminole again and the result took a 180-degree turn.
Leading almost all the way, the Lady Mustangs swept the match by scores of 25-20, 25-18, 25-12.
Except for some struggles at the end of the first game and early in the second, Sweetwater was in control against Seminole while getting strong individual performances from several players.
