Despite losing its two bracket play matches on Saturday at a weekend tourney in Wolfforth Frenship, the Sweetwater High School volleyball team has exceeded its victory total for the entire 2010 season.
Sweetwater went 2-1 in Fridayâs pool play and will enter todayâs match at Abilene Cooper with a 12-10 record. The match will begin at approximately 6 p.m. The Lady Mustangs ended 2010 with an overall mark of 11-28.
Josh Larue is the first Sweetwater High School Player of the Week. The 5-8, 220-pound senior defensive tackle came up big in the Mustangsâ 10-0 season-opening win over Vernon last Friday. He had five solo tackles, three for a loss, two sacks, one quarterback pressure and one assisted tackle.
MCCAMEY â Water Valley needed just one half of football to defeat Blackwell Saturday as it cruised to a 78-6 victory at the West Texas Six-Man Shootout.
Water Valley, in its first game under ex-Highland coach Karry Owens, enjoyed a 46-6 advantage at the end of the first period and added 32 points in the second stanza to end the game due to six-manâs 45-point mercy rule.
Jayden Jones scored the only Blackwell points on a 3-yard run in the first quarter. He was the Hornetsâ leading rusher with 30 yards on seven carries and also caught a 36-yard pass.
Roscoe quarterback Dillon Freeman is pictured in action during the team's season-opening football game. The Plowboys began on Friday at Albany and lost to the state-ranked Lions 57-7. Roscoe will try to regroup when the team takes on Hawley at Sweetwaterâs Sammy Baugh Classic at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Highland will travel to Loraine on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. game. The Hornets began Thursday and lost 24-8 to Bryson at the âRumble in the Jumbleâ Classic in Trent.
