Brownwood beatdown

February 9, 2011

BROWNWOOD — The Brownwood Lions dominated the first and third quarters so much in Tuesday’s 51-23 win over Sweetwater that they could afford to rest their starters and play their subs in the other two periods.
The victory — which improved the Lions to 3-3 in District 5-3A — came almost entirely on the strength of a 16-minute stretch where Brownwood outscored Sweetwater 47-9.

Lady Mustangs fall to Lady Lions

February 9, 2011

BROWNWOOD — Brownwood’s No. 18 Lady Lions lived up to their state ranking Tuesday, running off the game’s first 10 points and never looking back in a 55-26 win over Sweetwater that ended the regular season for both teams.
Patricia Wilson had 19 points for Brownwood (6-2), which will be District 5-3A’s No. 2 playoff seed. Brownwood also stifled Sweetwater (1-7, 16-17) defensively, allowing just single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters.

SW girls lose home finale

February 8, 2011

Returning to their home court for one final time — and less than 48 hours after a heart-breaking defeat at their gym Saturday to Big Spring that basically eliminated them from playoff contention — the Sweetwater girls basketball team had to deal with state-ranked Wylie.
As expected, the No. 14 Lady Bulldogs (8-0 district, 20-13) won, 58-38.
But the Lady Mustangs (1-6), after a rough first half, regrouped rather impressively and held their own with Wylie over the final two periods.

Short-handed Mustangs can’t stay with Wylie

February 8, 2011

The Sweetwater boys basketball team unveiled a new lineup against first-place Wylie here Monday as a pair of recent JV callups, Ryan Linebaugh and Kyle McSherry, started for the first time. The Mustangs also got a 20-point effort for the second straight game from junior guard Taylor Jones, who had 22 after dropping a season-high 28 on Big Spring just two nights earlier.

Steers’ sweep leaves SW in a ‘bum’ mood to face Wylie tonight

February 7, 2011

Once the Sweetwater boys basketball team finally got back into action Saturday after a 10-day layoff, it faced the unenviable task of trying to contain a very talented Big Spring team and standout guard Luke Adams.
The Steers, as expected, won convincingly (85-60) at Mustang Gym and Adams was amazing, hitting six treys and scoring 47 points as Big Spring moved to 4-1 in district while Sweetwater — which hosts Wylie in a makeup game at 7:30 p.m. today — stayed winless (0-5) in District 5-3A.
Sweetwater, though, was a lot tougher out than the Steers probably expected.

Big lead vanishes, playoff hopes fade for Lady Stangs as Big Spring rallies for win

February 7, 2011

For the vast majority of the first half of Saturday’s game against Big Spring, the Sweetwater girls basket-ball team appeared to be firmly in control.
The Lady Mustangs — desperate for a win in order to maintain realistic hopes of a playoff berth — seized the early momentum against the only team they have beaten in district play. But Big Spring staged a second-half comeback to win, 61-56, at Mustang Gym.

Plowboys stay in playoff contention with easy W

February 7, 2011

The Roscoe boys basketball team is still in playoff contention in District 9-A, Division I after a 59-24 win over Rotan on Saturday.
The Plowboys (5-3 in district, 13-10 overall) are tied with Haskell for sec-ond place after getting 21 points from Caden Smith and 20 from Cody Graham against Rotan. Devan Cole had nine, Jesus Leanos four, Juan Solis three and Keeston Ford two and the defense held Rotan to sin-gle digit scoring in all four quarters. Roscoe will host first-place Stamford (7-0) on Tuesday before ending the regular season on Friday at Munday (4-4).

Weather affecting local sports

February 4, 2011

With more rough weather in the forecast today, quite a few Nolan County sports teams continue to see their planned events affected.
At press time this morn-ing, the Sweetwater varsity girls and boys basketball teams were planning to play their scheduled games against Wylie here today, though the times had not been officially announced.
However, the games are still in doubt and could very well be moved to another date, since Wylie has called off classes today.
